Daring do and Victorious

Help required please.

Am building the Daring as a surprise for my father.  Have the Airfix kit + WEM photo etch bits.  Trouble is, where do all the fiddly bits go? i.e. ladders, steps, doors to use correct nautical terminology.

Have already trawled the internet which is a tad spartan. Also looked through generic post war naval literature. The Daring monograph is not out yet so if anyone has any plans or drawings hints tips etc please could you share.

Secondly, what is the Aoshima Victorious like? Has any one built it yet? Looking at the box art she appears to be in WW2 guise.

Have fond memories of making the Airfix kit as a lad and have a soft spot for the old gal. Plus Sea vixens and Scimitars-it just doesn't get much better.

will probably get the re:release.  it's a shame the wartime version is 1/700. Dad was on Victorious when she was used as a training ship post-war, so he remembers her without the angled deck.
He later served under Pecy Gick on HMS Daring, and was involved in the Comet crash search + Kephalonia eartquake relief- hence all the interest.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Hi Walrus,

Pleased to make your acquaintance

It's nice to have a historical connection to the models.

For my HMS Ajax, I trawled the net for photos and looked real hard to find the locations of the doors and ladders. I also had a line drawing which helped a little. I'm not sure what else I can recommend for HMS Daring.

The Aoshima 1/700 HMS Victorius was also issued as HMS Illustrious. Here's a short review I found of the kit:

"FAIR. Overall shape and guns OK, octuple 2 pdr pompoms are trash. If you can afford to salvage them from a Revell ARK ROYAL, or from a waterline KING GEORGE V do so."

Hi Walrus,
here is some stuff on HMS Victorious. I'm off school today so I had a bit of time to have a look for you.

thanks for comments chaps.

Guess I will have to wait for the Daring FAN Publications book but they don'y know when that will be.

Saw reviews of Aoshima Minsk + Kiev and it was the same stunt- both kits were  the same, so was half expecting that of Illustrious + Victorious .  Will probably just get the Airfix kit for now-being the same scale is a plus in my book. It is an old mould will doubtless have work cut out to get her into shape.
The Daring kit is all over the shop with some really off centre superstructure. The hull profile looks wrong too from the little info already have.  Will try to add the Mountbatten aft funnel as per summer of '53. Why do we make life harder than it surely needs to be

Thanks for the link Kitkiddie.  Tried a search there for Daring without success, but the colour question was interesting and there was some good footage of Gannets posted from YouTube-abonus

Hi Walrus,

Try searching under Australian Daring Class Destroyers here is a couple of sites that might prove useful;

HMS Daring features heavily in the Airfix Warship Modelling guide from the 70s, I had a look through at the weekend and it says a fair bit about detail work (pre-PE days of course) but I could see nothing about the hull shape.

is the airfix book worth getting?

I can scan/copy the Daring bits if you're interested.

Top man David that would be good of you
Am a newbie when it comes to ships so it would be really helpful

on a couple of profiles of the Daring class, (Thanks to Heinkel51 )the Prow sweeps down to about the waterline then changes angle to the perpendicular -the kit maintains the curve down to the keel- hope that makes sense.   some modelling putty will help unless someone knows better.

seeing some builds on the forum is inspiring - if i do a half decent job i will consider the build a team effort.

if the Daring turns out pants then it will be everyone else's fault!
