The paint scheme was based on the Vasa Museum´s recent research and their magnificent 1:25 scale model that has been painted accordingly a while ago.
Hence, the splendid Airfix boxart is dated, too, yet very nice nonetheless - and it was state-of-knowledge when designed.
I got to say I admire the quality of this Airfix kit from the early 1970ies a lot. Having painted all those tiny sculptures I was able to appreciate the lots of work and craftsmanship that went into this kit, and to me it has hold up well against the years.
There are obviously some differences to the current reconstruction of the vessel, but I only fixed the missing forecastle rail.
My Vasa will not receive any masts or rigging, but only the flagpoles seen in the images. I am depicting her right after being launched, so I can get away without all the really uber-fiddly stuff ;-)

I´ve bought a number of cheap and revoltingly pre-painted N scale railroading figures for conversion purposes.
Being most comfortable with working with dental casting wax, I used said material to convert the generic modern pedestrians to 17th century sailors. Here´s an example. The original figure looks like John Travolta in "Saturday Night Fever" - my aim was something resembling Mandy Patinkin in "The Princess Bride":
Obviously, this method doesn´t stand handling well, nor temperatures beyond 50°C ...

Thanks a lot for the kind replies!
She´s done now, figures are placed, only the acrylic gel needs a very long time for curing, so I still have to wait until I can take the definite images.
This is yet another Airfix kit that holds its own over a very long time, my deep appreciation to its designers!

Have you also built the St. Louis and Bounty ? I've never put them side by side with the older kits, but my impression is they are much coarser (in some cases heavy-handed) in detail than the old faithfuls.
Edit: Oops, should add that she looks marvellous

Never got around to build those ...
As a kid I built the Victory (twice), and the Revenge. That was all the classic ships I built then - neither space nor money.
I built the large Revell Constitution when I was 16, that was a year-long project!

That is superb workmanship! The bow and stern decorations are beautifully painted and the water looks very convincing.
