Hi from London

Hi everyone.

I haven't made a model since I was about eight or nine years old, so just before my 41st birthday last month, I casually announced to the wife that I wanted to start modelling again. I think she thought I meant catwalk stuff, but with a face like a bag of hammers and a body like Homer Simpson, she soon realised what I meant.

I came close to completeing an Airfix Spitfire a few weeks ago (my first model since those childhood days), but I ruined the decals and they all broke up (my own fault) as I was trying to apply them.  I then broke the actual model before throwing the thing on the kitchen floor in a temper tantrum, shattering it into about eight pieces.  It's been a while since I shed tears like that   .

I am now half way through an Airfix F117a Stealth, which somebody kindly bought for me.  So far, it's going much better than the now deceased Spitfire.  It's amazing what you can learn from this forum in particular and how much expert advice can save so much heartache.

Looking forward to 'meeting' some of you and most of all, learning from you.

Many thanks.

Hi Alfie and  Welcome  to the ATF
feanor

Ayup Alfie...

Welcome to ATF, Best on the web...
I'm glad you're already finding things useful here.

Don't worry, ATF 'put up' with anyone, 'cos god knows how I've managed to avoid a ban since we started...

And as they say, Looks aren't everything, If you search for a picture of 'Feanor' you'll see what i mean...

But I Can't wait to see your Stealth. I want one too, but ain't got one yet!

Enjoy !

Thanks for the welcome, guys.

And feanor, I wouldn't get too excited about my Stealth (or should I call it Nighthawk?) - this is my first model in a very, very long time (I don't think we'll count the Spitfire), but I will definitely post pics when it's done as I need to hear what I'm doing wrong to improve.

And hey, we can't help being born with naturally chiselled features

Hi Alfie and Welcome to the ATF. Hope you enjoy it here.

Hi Alfie and  Welcome  to the ATF, hope you enjoy the forum.

As for the Spitfire decals that may not have been your fault, if it was a recent issue (there would be a Hornby logo on the side of the box) there have been cases where the decals break up on contact with water. I've not had this happen to any of my kits (yet), but others on this forum have experienced this.

That's exactly what happened, yes!  I feel better knowing this, thank you

Welcome to the ATF.

Congratulations, Rigid!  I've used this name for many years on many forums and you're the first person to ever comment on it's origin.  It's a bit of a tribute to Peter Cook I suppose.  I salute you, sir! Cheers!  And thank you for the welcome.

Ayup Alfie...

Do i fall in the usual trap if i ask if John's your Brother?

Yep, I already have had a very warm, friendly reception to the forums, thank you.  Looking forward to learning from the masters.

I can see we're of the same generation, feanor.  Many fond memories of John, and Shep, although I'm sure I had a crush on co-presenter Valerie Singleton as a child.  How tragic is that?  I must have been about six at the time.

Ayup Alfie...

Looks like i did, LOL.

I have to say I was a Jenny Hanley Devotee...

I'm fine Paul, thanks!  I'm enjoying life (and Scotland) very much indeed.

I'm still not making models (yet) but am continuing to knock out the watercolours:

Nice watercolour dave, but there are some rocks in the way.

I'm totally jealous.  Must get to Orkney one of these days - archaeologists paradise!
davecov

Thank you lads. I have put some more pictures in my old "Painting" thread, here if you are interested.

And yes, Orkney is wonderful!
