Hms Hood airifx 1/600

After the smalls destroyers ,i return to a ship which is for me one of the most famous unit of the Royal Navy during the WW2...I will not dwell here on the history of the ship, everyone knows. The airifx kit is very very old and represents the ship during the 30's...prefering the 41's period and after analysing, read and watch a lot of documentation(thank Stuart for your precious help) ,he found that the amount of work to get a correct Hood from this kit is absolutly huge So i started to work and here are the first photos.I think breaking work in order not to lose the thread of changes and improvements and i will work deck by deck...My first trouble was the correction of the hull that was bent but nonetheless i don t managed to fully recover the plastic on tha front deck near the A and B turret...My kit was a ré edition and the moulding quality is not very good....
I have in additon to the full doc found on the net an excellent article in an old airifix  magasine dealing with this issue.

See you soon for the next stage ...

Looking very good already- I built this kit to the Airfix Magazine article about 30 years ago, or nearly so. I still have the model though it is a bit battered. This one looks like it will put my old effort to shame! Keep up the good work Remy and have a Merry Xmas and Happy New Year.
cheers Stuart
ps I'm reworking an old Heller Illustrious- photos fairly soon.
Commodore Rob

Looking good I built the kit to a 41 spec last year it takes some doing.. i still have to put the fiddly bits like boats on the kit:)

Hello the fellowship, here are new photos of my Hood.Work is progressing slowly because of the large number of small details all over the ship.Next week i starts operation for the casting of multiple pieces to complete the equipement and armement of the various bridges (ready to use amo boxes,up's launcher, life boats, life raft, fire rangefinders...) See you soon for the next, amitiés Rémy

Looking excellent Remy
T16S

Excellent- this just shows how a rather ancient and non too great model can be transformed by hard work and detailed information plus of course after market brass etch detail sets. Congratulations Remy a masterclass from a master!
cheers Stuart
ps I think I'm getting the Spee whipped into the correct shape at last- thanks
walrus

great to see the latest progress Remy
a joy as ever!
orionv

Has say T16S,an very old kit can be transformed in a very good model with HARD HARD HARD work,i become completly creazy  with this building....   At this time the building is over now  and i started the casting of all the multiple items...
Thank for all yours coments, amitiés Rémy
T16S

Ayup Remy,
The model is looking fantastic but I did ask if you could give us an insight into how you paint your models- will you document the Hood for us please. Plus now you mention casting parts- how do you do it- I would like to know.
cheers Stuart
orionv

Hello  the fellowship,so the Hood s building is now over(new photos soon),this morning i have wanted to beguin casting pieces but i ve had problems with my old vacum pump.Damned old machine.... So there will be delays in the completion of the moulds and the resin cast...  Luckily a friend of mine gave me a new vacuum pump. When the new pump will be at home,i makes pictures. For the painting ,it would be preferable that i make a photo report on another battleship more weathered than the Hood, may be on the Suffolk or another destroyer (hunt class or v/w class). The weathering will be more impressive than on the Hood. What you think?

Hello the fellowship, here are the latest photos of the Hood, assembly finally ends...
All the last small details will be added to the final. The next step will be the painting and when my problems of vaccum pump   will  be resolved ,casting all the remainings parts...
This assembly was boring because the basic layout was not really good, but the final result is up to the work and makes a beautiful homage to those who lost their lives on board.
See you for the next, amitiés Rémy

Hmmmm...
Looking totally excellent- Except I think that you omitted the third deck  mushroom ventilator on the quarterdeck- never mind. It's a minor thing.

Don't worry about it because I'm just pulling your leg (English for joking).
cheers Stuart

orionv

Hello stu, thank again for the Ajax. The Hood building is not finish totaly, some little details are missing like  the crew and a great part of  the ready to use amo boxes and the gun on the 4"turrets.All the fire randge finder are in place ,rigging is over.As soon as possible i post new photos and when the building will be totaly over i post finals picts in the correct section of the forum. My next build is the Hms suffolk, work has started this morning but i still lack a little documentation,my file isn t complete. With the Suffolk i try to make a good photo report for the painting job because he was an heavy weathered ship

orionv

Work and work and work,a hint of technique and talent and you re...
walrus

Excellent work Remy, as masterful as ever!

when i look at the expanded photographs i forget they are 1/600 scale
brilliant!

ps saw Stuart's scratchbuilt Warspite (but not Stuart himself- he grabbed his boat and ran home as fast as possible when he heard i was looking for him at Huddersfield on Sunday!)

an excellent piece of work- the Warspite - not Stuart
TimJ

Excellent work Remy. C'est magnifique.

It’s always a pleasure to see your work, orionv.
You make models and details, I can only dream of.

Do you have a loose estimate how many hours a build normally take?

With kind regards from Jesper.
orionv

Generaly i spend  between 1 or 2 months by models,it s very various...By example the Hood take a very long time between 2 and 3 months and the graf spee only 1 month 1/2....it depends on the documentation available and the state of the basic kit and other factors.

daniel7891

Stunning work Remy
T16S

Ayup Remy- you excel yourself- all previous builds are as nothing- the ultimate Airfix Hood. I have no doubt that no one has ever built this model with such detail. Yet I have one little point to make (doing a Walrus but) are the sailors in whites? If they are they should be in blues- whites were only worn overseas in warmer climes and in the Home Fleet blues would be the order of the day.
cheers Stuart  Sofa
ps or have you yet to paint them?
walrus

Silly Stuart

the crew have yet to be painted- do you see any of them with faces?
Remy is going to paint them all with individual expressions
orionv

I prefer  painting the crew in white or black and white to make a contrast.i know very well that the uniform should be in  blue but with the crew paint in this coulour the effect desired is not reached. It s a question of scale. For the  Hotspur the crew is painted in blue and the effect is not really extra ...So i prefer this way...but it s not THE way of course...it is a matter of personal taste
Amities Rémy
PS  I don t have the pretention of having made the ultimate model of Hood ....
