I'm intrigued as to who is doing the tooling for this one.
I wonder if Dragon are in on it?
They already do a 1/700 one.

What sort of price will this go for?

Most likely around forty quid at a guess.
Just got this from a friend who was at Telford today.
"What you must remember is that the Falklands War is very old news to anyone in the UK under 35 years old - the war was in 1982!
On the other hand HMS Illustrious was the subject of a TV series last year which had very high viewing figures - it was more of a hit - due to the characters on board - than the TV company expected.
It is a sign of the new market orientated Airfix that they would base their kit on the ship the average UK casual buyer knows because it has been on TV - remember that 99% of the kits sold go to the average guy - or average birthday present buyer - and have a life measured in days not weeks!
We enthusiasts are the minority in the market - and long may those average buyers exist or we would only have bespoke resin kits to buy!
HMS Illustrious is to be produced in 1/350 scale and is due in 2009 but they wisely, knowing how even slight delays in producing moulds can lead to slippage in schedules, would not be drawn on an exact month!
In 1/600th both Warspite and Iron Duke are to be reissued during 2009 in response to many requests from modellers - so it pays to ask!
No definite news on any more links with Mirage re 1/400th ships - they said that the relationship is very good but it is just practical things that need to be negotiated such as are the kits boxed in Poland or in the UK - nothing major but points that obviously need to be decided between them probably at Nuremburg."

Hmmm,
Nice to see (1) a new RN ship, (2) scale 1/350 - in answer to my 'prayers' to Airfix. I will have 2 if they can be modelled to show the differences in build.
Cheers,
Hugh Williams

I'll definitely have one, especially as, in series 12, it'll be the same price as the 1/24 Spitfires. I'll also get the Invincible and Ark Royal versions if/when they release them.

I hope we get some 1/350 Sea Harriers to go with it.
Maybe even FRS-1s & FA-2s. Or would that be too much to hope for?

IIRC Tamiya and Trumpeter do 1/350 Aircraft sets to go with their Carrier Kits ...certainly have USAF/USN aircraft , not so sure about RAF/RN .

White Ensign Models do a range of 1/350 aircraft, including Lynx, Sea King, Sea Harrier and Harrier GR5/7 which are all suitable for the Illustrious at various times in her career. They also do lots of detail parts, and will almost certainly do an etched detail set for the Airfix kit (as they do sets for most new ship kits as they come out).

That is probably all the country can afford.

Acording to another modeling site, the price for the 1/350 Illustrious has been set at 45 pounds sterling, so the release date cant be too far away. BTW mattbacon, nice photoshop job, I was there on that day as well,,,

great isn't it a wonderful 1/350 carrier with no fixed wing aircraft. must be Jolly good fun flying the Merlins off the ski jump
brother has informed me the naval "wing" of the "Joint" Harrier Force has a grand total of FOUR Harriers! whooo!
don't fly 'em all at the same time guys!

Yes, I must admit the box art is disapointing compared to the usual Airfix box art, seems to be aimed at promoting interest in the Royal Navy as much as the model , and only 4 Harriers, very strange, after all it is a "Harrier Carrier", but it wont stop me from getting the model at all. I wonder if a helicopter has ever used the ski-jump for a rolling take-off, I imagine that would be interesting to watch.

That is the problem Paddy - there virtually aren't any Harriers. the "wing" has been whittled back
don't mind the box art too much but yes- a Shar leaping into the air would have been cool.
(or Eddie the "Eagle" wearing rollerblades and a jet pack strapped to his back)

mind you, you could always get some lunatic stunt driver in a 7 litre V8 yank muscle car go belting off the ramp, see if he could set a new world record for aircraft carrier jumping. You could have Ark Royal a couple of hundred yards away facing Illustrious and see if he could land on the Ark, now that would be cool.

[Rant mode on] And why has it been whittled back - because once again the Fleet Air Arm is being totally shafted by the RAF. My former boss, until he retired 2 weeks ago, was spending every working moment of every day trying to make the case to Ministers why it is madness to hand over the Fleet Air Arm to the light blue.
I quite like Field Marshal Lord Inge's view when in his final speech as Chief of the Defence Staff, he argued for the total disbandment of the RAF . Hand the mudmovers to the Army, the maritime to the Navy, split the Air Defence and rotary forces 50:50 and let Sir Richard Branson take over the tanker and transport fleet.

I make you right wookie. the three branches of the British military have spent far to long working against each other instead of working in unison, like the Germans did. And talking of the whittled down air wing (tactfully shifting back to the subject in hand), I've had a look on Trumpeter's, Tamiya's and WEM's website's for 1/350 Sea Harrier's, no one is listing them, despite it being mentioned earlier that there was after market items available, there's a few helicopters, but no sign of the Harriers. Can someone provide a link to where these Harrier's are as I would like to get some of them, thanks.
