HMS Tiger/ Daring colour scheme

Hi, I'm in the middle of the Tiger & Daring set and both ships have Humbrol 27 as their basic colour scheme. Is this a bit dark for the 'peacetime' era they operated in... pictures of contemporary ships I have look more like a Humbrol 64.... I've just finished the Hood.. again in H27 but this is, (is this??), probably correct for the North Atlantic in WW2. thanks for advice

You're quite right.  H27 is far too dark.  For that matter probably so is H64 (although I must confess that is what I trditionally use).  H127 is probably a closer match (and gives that slightly gloss finish that ship side grey has).

phew.... thanks a lot for advice. I'm never quite sure where Airfix get their references from!  I was looking at either H196 or H127 to give that slightly glossy look but will go for the H127 as it appears the best match with a photo my Dad took of HMS Brighton in 1962 at a Portsmouth navy day... I've already painted the decking H30 (again as per Airfix instructions), but now I'm not too sure about that !... any advice on that also?? thanks again

I tend to use H30 for the green non-skid deck paint that was prevalent in the 60s/70s.  It's probably a little too light but with the variations caused by scale you can get away with it.

thanks... on looking at what colour photos I have found H30 does look probably OK.. I'd already decided on using it and am just putting the final touches to the painting so will post a pic when done ...I'll start HMS Tiger when that's done so guess same colour scheme.  thanks again and much appreciated

Don't forget though that Tiger had a teak quarterdeck.  I've never found a really good representation for that but then the colour can vary so much in real life depending upon how fastidious the Buffer was

thanks ... yes the paint schemes in the kit are pretty basic showing the same 4 colours for both ships... (inc H27 which I've avoided)..I've not managed to get a teak effect yet having tried mixing 'tan' with a few alternatives inc natural wood. On HMS Belfast last month I was talking to one of the 'attendants' who said the quarterdeck was due to be scrubbed the following day and would look almost white... so you're right about there being a bit of leeway in the final colour. .. thanks again
