Le Clemenceau

As mentioned in the post on surviving WW2 ships, the 1957 built French aircraft carrier, Clemenceau, known as Le Clem, has now arrived in Hartlepool. I understand that there is a Heller model of what looked to have been a good looking ship for its day. Out of interest has anyone built the kit?

Sad to say the old girl looked like a bit of a rust bucket when i saw her this afternoon, but as she has been sat in Brest for some time and this is her last trip that's probably no surprise.

Are we going to see another repetition of you can't scrap that TOXIC ship here saga? Actually I might pop up there to see her before she is dismantled.
cheers Stuart

Thanks Mr Brown

why pollute lots of places when one will do?

what is deemed the problem with the Clem - was she nuclear ?
from the beeb linky they said she wasn't a controversy

She is laiden with tonnes of Asbestos
walrus

Thanks luke

it is not nice.  My daughter's uncle died all too soon thanks to working on the shipyards on the Tyne with that stuff, dare say there will be plenty in the North East with a similar tale to tell.

Tonnes and tonnes of the stuff, when she was built it seems they went through a list of things they weren't quite sure if they were toxic and said why not! The coatings on all of the wirings is also toxic and there is a list the length of my arm of these toxins! As for the breaking up in tyneside the major breakers in Ghent don't want here and it is better it being broken by a nation that can deal with the stuff rather than in india where it would be open to all and no safety gear would be given to help the workers blighting entire generations in Alang.

Why should we deal with every other countries problems!!!!!
walrus

Like m0rris said, Luke

if this country has the expertise and safety regs to dismantle the hulk with due diligence then it is better than some one tearing it up willynilly polluting the environment and killing the workforce like we used to do here.
Ratch

As our manufacturing industry has been dismantled we've had to diversify into dismantling stuff  Whistling

Also its ecuase able UK want more metal and ave the ability to take these projects on; as they are primarily a scrapping firm not a decontamination firm!

In a short answer to Stuart, yes i did get some pics, but i have not downloaded them as yet. The links shown above probably have better shots than mine anyway!

In the other posts i have mentioned these ships on i have steered away from the "politics", but yes this is a repeat of the ghost ships saga. My own opinion is it is better to have them broken up here, rather than on a beach in India, or any other part of the world especially as up to 200 jobs may well be created while they are scrapped.  But, and its a big BUT, Le Clem alone has over 700 tonnes of rubbish which cannot be recycled, such as asbestos, PCBs various other chemicals and oils. This will all be placed in landfill less than a couple of miles from where i and my family live.

If you do visit, the ships are visible from the Post Clarence/Seal Sands to Hartlepool road. Parking on the road can be tricky so probably better to park in Graythorp (a former village now an industrial estate). Please also be aware that  as we have a nuclear power station up here, if you take pictures you can be stopped by the Civil Nuclear Police who usually only request details, but are armed!!!

And i think that is all i will say on this or the rules will get quoted.
