Posting Pictures in the Forum

Unfortunately, there is no space to store pictures on this forum. You will need to get some free server space (your isp will have given you some) and link to the photos that way.   Your pictures will still be able be displayed in your posts.  Just click on the "Img" button, then type your picture URL (address) and click the "Img*" button.  You picture will then appear when you preview or submit your post. Alternatively, paste your link into your post, select that link and click the  "Img" button once.

Sadly, the Airfix Gallery pictures have .aspx links and these do not work!  You will have to link to them using the URL tags instead.

If your ISP does not have any server space for you, use a picture hosting service such as PictureTrail (http://www.picturetrail.com/),  PhotoBucket (http://photobucket.com/) or Imageshack (http://imageshack.us/) for your pictures.

When displaying your pictures, please do not put too many large pictures in one post/thread as a lot of people are still on dial-up. Keep the width to 800 pixels or less.  If you do have a lot of pictures, either just post the links, use thumbnails or preferably sub-divide your post into manageable sizes of 10-15 images. When quoting somebody else's post, only quote that part of the post that is relevant and change any images to links instead. This not only helps those members on slow connections, but is standard netiquette - the conventions that should be followed on Usenet, mailing lists, live chat, and Internet forums.

Please read the Rules for Using this Site thread concerning the posting of copyrighted material.

I have set up picture gallery forum so that members can post pictures of their builds. Just go to the appropriate gallery forum, create a post and insert links to your pictures.

Posting Pictures - HTML Enabled

HTML has now been enabled, this means that we can re-size photos to a more friendly size and add a hyperlink to the full size image. Remember, you must set "Always allow HTML" to "Yes" in your profile. , As you can see in these pictures of HMS Gloucester that I took last year. The code for the first picture can be seen in the next post.

It also means that you can now display your Airfix gallery pictures (.aspx files) in your posts too. You can also shrink the size of links to a more manageable size. To go to the Airfix.com site you can now say, go here

I have tried various ways to cut and paste pictures as we did on the old forum but it just does not work. I will keep investigating though.

Dave
davecov

Here is the code to display the first picture as seen in the previous post. Remember, you must set "Always allow HTML" to "Yes" in your profile to see pictures. I have deliberately disabled it in this post so that you can see the code.

<img src="http://www.davecov.com/ships/britain/pictures/destroyers/gloucester/thumbs/t200_gloucester_02_thumb.jpg" border="0" width="202" height="130"></a>

To display an image without a hyperlink, just use:

<img src="http://www.davecov.com/ships/britain/pictures/destroyers/gloucester/thumbs/t200_gloucester_02_thumb.jpg" border="0" width="202" height="130">

Just to help people when re-sizing large pictures into a screen-fitable size, you should use this small bit of code:

<img src="YOUR IMAGE URL BETWEEN THE SPEECH MARKS" border="0" width="800" height="600">

As the membership has been growing, I thought I'd kick this back to the top

I also resize my pics in Paint Shop Pro 7 to w533 h711 and that seems to give a good pic on the page thats not to big but still able to see the detail on the model.

Dave,

I've noticed you or one of the other Moderators have edited some of my more recent posts where I have linked to a picture directly from another site replacing the image with the image's URL.....Sorry if I have caused you any inconvenience.

For future reference is it acceptable to link an Image direct with a suitable disclaimer (For discussion purposes only etc.) as I have done in some of my very earliest posts (Which remain un-edited). Of course where possible I would give credit to the copyright owner in such an instance as I have generally also done previously.

Just wanted to clarify the position.....After all at a 1000 words a pop they save on some keyboard wear!

All the very best as always
Andy Smith

Hi Andy,

Sorry, but it is not possible to put a disclaimer as you have done. Believe me, the forum hosts are extremely strict on copyright and a disclaimer is not good enough. They suspend forum for even the most minor of "offences" and I won't risk ATF going through that. On my own web site, I wouldn't have any problems doing as you say, especially as the posting of images would be information only and not for commercial gain. But, as I said, on the ATF is it a no, no.

If you have made posts earlier on containing images that have not been changed to links, then that would have been because they have been missed. Not surprising considering the large number of posts. They will need to be changed and is something I can do in due course.

NP Dave,

I' ll sort any I discover myself.....I like coming here to chat too much to mess things up for you & everyone else!

Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it's off to edit we go!

All the best
davecov

That's okay. I went through all 234 of your posts today and I think they have all been sorted out - and the multiple renaming of titles! BTW, watch your language! I've just edited your post above to remove the asterisked naughty word! We're getting you trained........ slowly!

Dave
Sgt.Squarehead

ooooooooooooook!

OK, I'm trying, but the monkey-picture did not get chosen for me by accident!

BTW: You missed one in 'Favourite Types' but I got it! See.....Helpfulmonkey!

I hope I'm not being too obtuse (again ) but I'm unsure where we stand about posting images of box tops?

I had posted a picture of the Trumpeter M4A3 box in my Demo-Build but I am uncertain where we would stand on this.

TIA & All the best
Ratch

Airfix boxes are fine, we have permission
Other manufacturers are not
Sgt.Squarehead

Cheers Richard!

I thought it might be along those lines so I edited it to a link.

All the best
Steven Pietrobon

What if its your own photo of the box?
davecov

From the forum rules "You can photograph a box and it's contents solely for the purposes of a Group Build or Kit Review though. ". That can extend to other purposes such as a demo build too.

Dave
Sgt.Squarehead

So I'm in the clear to use my own (very poor) photo of my own kit box as part of a demo-build of that kit. That also works for me!

Thanks for clearing this up guys....I'll change it back to a piccy!

All the best
Ratch

That makes no sense to me what-so-ever can you delete the post with the link please mr Ratch
Is there any websites where you can upload pictures to put into picture section that are free?

AFCBGeorge wrote:

I have 2474 images stored on Picturetrail and it costs me
AFCBGeorge

ah, I clear out photos I'm not using any more! sounds like I'm safe for a bit...
ColinM

All of the picture hosting sites offer a free account with restrictions on numbers of pictures and total file sizes. After that you either have to remove pictures to upload new ones (which means they will disappear from here too) or upgrade to a paid account.

I'm with Picturetrail and the annual cost is modest. If cost is a problem, open free accounts with several providers, e.g. Snapfish, Picturetrail, Photobucket...

Colin
Owen

Flickr, Photobucket, Picturetrail and Fotopic are all good free hosting sites.

I tend to use Imageshack for one-off uploads - quick and easy and you don't have to sign up.

Depends how many e-mail addresses you have, too. We have 3 photobucket accounts registered at 3 separate e-mail addresses....

I've got a couple of accounts with photobucket to spread the amount of photos
glen3312

hi all, sorry in advance if this is a really stupid question, ive got myself a photobucket account sorted and have sussed out how to get pics from my picture gallery to it and i think i understand how to get pics onto a post. the thing is how do i get the URL address on to the post? hope that makes sense and please bear in mind im NOT computer literate
Spike

Here's just a suggestion; most internet service providers offer you a significant amount of free websapce with your accounts, typically to hold your own websites.

If you took the offer from them and downloaded a free FTP client you could upload bucket loads of images and for no more than you currently pay to be connected to the internet.

Check with your ISP if you have free space for a website, set it up (usually online by saying YES I want to have  my own website), and then when it tells you your web address, use that information to setup the free FTP software you download (try CuteFTP it's my personal fav.)

Then, anytime you want to upload from your PC just load the FTP software and drag and drop from your computer to your webspace - it really is quite simple.

If anyone needs any help feel free to PM me.

The easiest way is to use the [ img] & [ /img] tags - just put the URL of your picture between them. I've had to put a space just after the opening bracket to stop them being treated as proper tags - omit the space when you use them.
glen3312

no sorry guys, thanks for your replies but i think im doing something seriously wrong, gone to have to get someone to actually show me
daniel7891

I will have a go at explaining it:

In your photobucket, in your gallery: you  will see your pictures and underneath each picture  when you hover your mouse over it there are four lines (four boxes) eith:

- Email and IM
-Direct link
-HTML Code
-IMG Code

The IMG code is the one you want. All you have to do is click in the box with the IMG Code inside. It will highlight and then a little yellow box will appear next to it saying "copied". Finally all you need to do is go to the post here on the ATF and paste it in.

If anything isnt clear or you need more help just give me a shout
glen3312

thanks Daniel, im getting there slowly just a couple of questions 1. how do you "paste" and 2. do i need to start the post before i go to photobucket? sorry for being a bit of a numpty, ive checked my idiots guide to windows vista but it doesnt actually tell you how to paste, thanks for your time guys.
Ratch

To paste either Ctrl +V or right click & click on paste
I have two windows open, one on here and the other on the image hosting site    copy from the latter and paste in the former
glen3312

thanks all, i googled "how to paste" and think im nearly there, at least i now know what the right button"s for
daniel7891

I do the same as Ratch
Roger 410

Hi All,
I am in the same position as Glen3312 re 25th of November.

I have got some of my photos into Photobucket and I have progressed to Daniel7891`s note about the IMG code and getting it to the copied stage.

How do I go about getting it pasted into the ATF?

I will need talked through this step by step as I am totally computer illerate. Can anyone assist me?

Am using Windows Vista if this makes any difference.

Roger.
Richard M

Once you have copied the IMG code from the box on Photobucket, make a post on ATF in the usual way.

Write your text, then I usually press return to leave a lines space,

then as Ratch says press and hold down the control button on your keyboard "Ctrl" and press the "v" key, this will paste the IMG code into the post. To check everything is OK, preview your post. You should see the picture in your post.

In the actual text you should see a line like this (I have added the asterixs to enable you to see the code)

[IMG*]http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u17/ChairmanRed/Group%20Builds/Gloster%20Gladiator/IMG_1594.jpg[/IMG*]

I hope that helps
Best
Rich
Roger 410

Thanks Rich,

I have managed to get one posted to Airfix Aircraft-Military Forum on the Beaver 03017, but have ended up with the photo duplicated!!!!

This is probably the result of blundering about in Photobucket earlier in the afternoon.

There are probably others like that.  Should I delete them from Photobucket and
then re-enter them to avoid more double prints?
Richard M

They were from the same single image on photobucket, so that's not the problem. I suspect you held the "V" key down along with the "CTRL" key rather than pressing "V" once, which pasted 57 IMG codes of the same image into the post, making 57 images across the post. I've edited it down to the single image   .
Don't worry, practice makes perfect, if it happens again just pm a mod or admin and we'll help sort it out.
Best
Rich
Roger 410

Yes Rich,

You are quite right in your assumption,  I was somewhat bemused are all the
IMG codes flying by.

farmroad38

Hi Patrik.

I think the problem is that the URL you are including in the img tags is not a jpg or gif file, and that is what the forum software is expecting.  Is there any way that you can convert it to an image type file?
stonehead

Aaahh now it works, first i have taken the wrong choice of the link copy...

thank you farmroad38

Moderation restrictions

i\'m struggling! i\'ve posted literally hundreds of pics on forums using photobucket but i\'m not having any success here.
the above should be a pic of my stephensons rocket, but it just gives me this moderating restrictions message
Ratch

Next post should work
You need to make more than 2 posts

Correction    just edited the '1efc483406' out of the [img] tags
phil b.

cheers ratch! and hello btw
i wondered what those extra characters were, didn't think to just delete them out
i always think that until you have successfuly posted a pic you're not a "proper" member of a forum, like a sort of initiation!
phil b.

ahh.....
its still happening, i can't edit out those bits the forum is adding into my image url because it won't actually put up the post.
is there a minimum number of posts i have to make before i can put pics up?just tried again keep getting this-

"Moderation restrictions

Sorry, you won't be allowed to use the BBcode reserved to moderation !"

i'm not trying to use any bbcode! i don't even know what it is!
Owen

Check in your profile that BB code is allowed, it may be that you've got it turned off (BB Code is, simply things like the [img] brackets that allow images to show)
Ratch

It's not that Owen, I've just checked
Ratch

It might be just this thread
phil b.

same thing happened in the aircraft gallery. also i tried the image tags from the message body and they just don't seem to work either
peebeep

In your Photobucket albums just copy the IMG code and paste it into your reply dialogue, it has the BB code attached and there is no need to hit the Img button here.

peebeep
phil b.

Sorry, you won't be allowed to use the BBcode reserved to moderation ! "

nope! still happening!
to bear in mind i've just posted this pic on three other sites with no problems at all doing what peebeeb suggested (which is the way i've been posting pics on forums for about the last five years)
could the problem be at your end?

put this up using the attach file function so i'm getting there!
farmroad38

Phil,

I doubt the problem is with us, as we have lots of other pictures posted!

I've just modified your post above, and the picture shows.  There were some numbers within the [ img ] tags - any idea what they were?  I've removed them anyway.

The problem with the attach file function is that it is for temporary uploads only - the forum hosts clear it out periodically.
phil b.

yeah i've seen those extra numbers, and i can't seem to delete them out or anything.  and i don't know what they are or where they come from.
one thing though, when i preview my post the pic is there as it should be, its only when i try to actually post it i keep getting this moderater message
phil b.

oooooookay......
this is a pic from fotopics and wallop! its straight in. it would seem that theres something up with my photobucket stuff and whatever i'm trying to do here. my pb stuff is going on other sites no problem however my fotopics stuff is going on this site no problem!
dontcha just love this modern technology
so, fingers crossed, i'll start showing you guys that i'm a bit better with model kits than computers and digital images!

Not sure what you mean when you say you can't delete them out.  If you copy the image string from photobucket and then paste it into the reply box, can't you just remove them then?
phil b.

they arn't there until i try to post the image, when i did i got the moderator bbcode thing i.e.-
"Sorry, you won't be allowed to use the BBcode reserved to moderation !"
with my post instead of the usual "your message has been posted"
its a mystery to me whats happening, however using another hosting site lets me put up pics, so its not the end of the world.
the above pic was put in the post using the message body image tags above where i typing this now.
as i said its a puzzle but not a problem to use fotopics instead of photobucket.
i'm a happy bunny now
