The 328 was intended as a cheap, semi-expendable parasite fighter to accompany He 177 or Me 264 bombers. The model is a Me328V-1, an unpowered version flown (but not released) several times late in 1943. 10 prototypes were built, but it was aerodynamically poor; pulse engines were tried in twos and fours, beneath the wings and on the fuselage sides, but their noise and vibrations caused constant problems. The A series was abandoned, a few B-0s were started but not completed and the Jumo 004B turbojets (replacing the pulse jets) did not materialise _________________ and was Jerusalem, builded here

As promised, a couple of pics to go with my description earlier in the week. First the Me328:
And then the fuselage and wings of the Do217E mated together:
Hopefully I'll be able to make a bit more progress over the weekend...

How does this Do217 differ from the one I recall from the 70s? _________________ circumveniat quod circumiret

I can't say that I know - in the 70s I was eating Farley's rusks and wearing nappies.....
The photos below show the state of play this morning, and I haven't had chance to update the pics since then (I'd rather build than photograph )
The Me328 is all together. The canopy had a bit of a gap at the rear where it met the fuselage, so I filled that and have sanded it down. I've also done a bit of work with a fine grade sanding block since this pic in preparation for priming.
I've now got a single coat of H64 as primer on the upper surfaces and it's actually come out quite well. I hope to do the underneath one night this week and then it will be ready for painting.
The Do217E has also progressed - a lot of sanding and filling has been necessary - wosrt of all around the tail. The kit has two alternative tailcones, a short one for the standard bomber, I guess, and a longer one for the Mistel. This was a very poor fit and you can see the huge amount of filler needed. Paula has also kindly masked up my transparencies and I've also put those in place along with their associated guns. The fit of these is good and snug.
On the underside, I've assembled the undercart legs into the engine nacelles. The kit should allow these to move and retract but I've fixed them in place. I've the added the undercarriage doors (with superglue - a fiddly job I hate), and fixed the whole lot onto the aircraft:
After this work, I've done more sanding at the back end and then I've added the tails piece by piece along with a few engine details.
It's coming on, slowly but surely.

I'd say you're making quite rapid progress there, Dan! _________________ "It's life Jim, but not as we know it!" - Dr McCoy

I have a feeling that the longer tailcone contains a dive-brake for a for a dive-bomber variant that Dornier were obliged to build, per Hitler's requirement.....He did the same to the He177 designers too IIRC.....The loon!
All the best

I believe it was actually Ernst Udet who was so enamoured of dive bombing that he insisted the He177 etc be capable of it. The Ju87 was on the point of cancellation when he took over from Wolfram von Richthofen at the RLM and reinstated it - as well as insisting that the Ju88 be capable of dive bombing and, later, the He177. The latter was such a disaster it hardly mattered, but the Schnellbomber might have been a touch more schnell had it not been for the extra weight needed to stress it for acting as a sturkampfflugzeug. |

Here's a photographic update, for what it's worth - it only shows what I described above... the Dornier with the tail in place and sanded rear end.
I'm now going to sit down and spend an hour to get the tailwheel on, sand it a little and the prime it in H64, along with the underside of the Me328.

I don't remember what the fit of these kits was like 35 years ago. Has it always been that rough or is it tool degradation? _________________ circumveniat quod circumiret

A bit of progress - after finishing up the H64 during the week, I've now started applying the H30 to both aircraft.
The easy one is the Me328 as it is all H30 on the upper surfaces.
And I've started laying out the rough H30 areas on the Do217.
A bit more tomorrow, perhaps...

First coat of H65 under the Me328 and 1st coat of H66 setting out the splinter camo on the Dornier.
Not worth photographing yet as it's only the first coat and still a bit transparent.

Dornier 217 first - the splinter pattern is now all laid out and, in fact, the pale blue underside is well on its way too - this shows only the camouflage, though:
The Me328 is now painted up fully and Kleared, too. It needs the wing leading edges tidying but then it's ready fro the decals:

After a bit of a break, I've tidied up the Me328 - but not as to be worth photographing.
The major progress has been on the Dornier, which is now close to being complete. I need to add the tailwheel doors and then it's complete and ready for Klear, although I already have Kleared the front end to make sure that all of the cockpit framing stays put:
Oh, and I still need to touch up the props and spinners and paint the funny exhausty things.
