I was going to try, but then I remembered that they've had three coats of Klear and I might scrape this off, making it look worse.
Anyway here's the picture as promised:
I'll apply the decals on Wednesday (I'm at hospital again all day Tuesday and Wednesday morning) and should have the varnish on by Thursday.
Completed pics should be up by the end of the weekend at the latest. _________________ 60% of the time it works every time.

Apologies for the late finish. I got admitted into hospital with an infection (nothing too serious) on Bonfire Night after feeling rough with a fever for a couple of days and only got discharged yesterday.
Decals are going to go on tomorrow then varnish should only take a couple of days. _________________ 60% of the time it works every time.

Hi Feanor.
It wasn't difficult, infact it was quite easy. The only problem is that it is time consuming, especially when you use brushes like I do.
You simply have to take your time while masking, make sure you burnish it well with a cocktail stick then some Klear to make sure the paint won't run. Then apply the first coat of paint, wait until that's dry then apply the second. You must then let this dry at least overnight before removing the masking and starting the next colour of the splinter. Simply keep doing this for each colour and the job should be a good one.
Like I said at the top of the post, patience is key. You can't rush it it and unfortunately there are no short cuts (that I know of at least). _________________ 60% of the time it works every time.

Nice job! Here's mine from an older boxing and almost completed back in March:
I used 86 for the green, 10 for the brown and a 50/50 mix of 90 and 86 for the grey.

Your splinter looks great John. Are those colours closer to the correct colours used by the Germans than the instruction call outs that I used? _________________ 60% of the time it works every time.

The colours were the result of a comparing Humbrol paints I had available with XtraColor versions of the same colours, and selecting the best match. It's purely a "what looks good to me" measure!

Just a quick update about the decals, to put it simply, they're awful.
I applied a coat of liguid decal film to help prevent them from breaking up, which worked except for the starboard ID.
However they were really difficult to get off the brown backing paper, even using extremely hot water and once on the model some wouldn't settle easily (even using MicroSol and MicroSet) and the others wouldn't budge once on the model so couln't be repositioned.
I would recomend that if you pruchase a new Airfix kit and the decals are on brown backing paper try to avoid using them and source an aftermarket set.
Luckily my model has turned out ok, not brilliant but ok and I would hate to see someone's model ruined at the last stage by poor decals.
I'll post pics once the Matt Cote has been applied. _________________ 60% of the time it works every time.

Finally the finished product!!
All in all this was a good kit and I would recommend it to anyone. Just take care with the wing to fuselage join and I would suggest an aftermarket decal set. _________________ 60% of the time it works every time.
