I shall be building a RAFG WE177 weapon loading diorama.
Comprising of
HAS Shelter
A brace of 16Sq Tornado IDS one conventionally armed
A Weapon loader
Nato ground troops and aircrew.
Scorpion Tank
Bedford 1 Tonne Truck
Bedford 1 Tonne Refueller
Land Rover
I have most things in the stash. The 1 Tonne Truck and the Land Rover i'll get from my LMS at the weekend. The Bedford Refueller has not been released yet so depending on the release schedule I may get the JB models release. Airfix bought the moulds from JB last year so all the vehicles bar the tank will be ex JB moulds.
Pictures will follow once I've found everything |

I take it that there is an Airfix building kit among that lot?

The building need not be a kit, it could be scratchbuilt, but some part of the Dio must be of Airfix origin to comply with the rules
The above is what Ratch originally wrote when he started the ball rolling on this GB.
With six airfix kits out of the seven making the diorama i think it falls within the parameters. but like Top guns one have you shifted the goal posts on this one |

I'm sorry but I wasn't aware of those rules at all.....Do you have a link?
It was my impression that the focus of the GB was to be one of the Airfix building series.....Hence its title!
I'll PM Ratch and check we don't have crossed wires here.
All the best

Ah that will be the post five before this one:
| Ratch wrote: | A sort of Airfix Building Diorama GB
That has potential |
It was my impression that those were suggestions prior to the GB being decided upon.....At this rate we will be including the Tardis!
At any rate I'm happy to be overruled.....It's Ratch's call as far as I'm concerned!
All the best

OK......After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that the GB title pretty much states it all. While the possibility of a scratchbuild was raised very early in the wider 'Diorama GB Chat', it is quite clear that the discussion moved on to focus exclusively on Airfix buildings, an Airfix vacform base would be equally acceptable.
I hope this clears things up, all the best

I will do the diorama based on the Airfix 06904 Modern Airfield Set,
replacing the harrier with a Tornado and reducing the amount of Vehicles I can fit on to it.
Vehicles will be the Airfix Scorpion tank, Airfix Bedford 1 ton truck and perhaps an Airfix LWB land rover. Figures will be the Airfix RAF Ground Types.
I built the Forward Command Post, Waterloo Farmhouse and Jungle Thingy back in the seventies, but they were never painted just assembled and played with.
This will be the first proper diorama I will have built and will need a bit of guidance on the old grassy, soil, tree things to use. |

Sounds great!
There a few old hands at dioramas on the site and I'm sure they will be very glad to help you out with all manner of tips and techniques.
I think you are safe in not worrying about trees too much on an airbase, but you can do quite a bit to make grass & concrete look interesting.

I've got the base now and some grass too ! It appears to be smaller than advertised but then again it was vac-formed originally for a Harrier not a Tornado. I shall have to extend the base to fit all of it on.
Pictures to follow |

I apologise for my previous bad grammar and my spelling now ! You have to get a spell checker on this thing.
I shall have to extend the base to fit all of the kits upon it. |

The vacform base will be extended with a bit of plastic card. Something like this

Was going to start on the Scorpion Tank last night but could not find it.
Decided to continue with my other builds instead. Found it in another stash this morning so will commence on the build tonight. |

Decided last night to prime the other builds I'm doing first so the Scorpion is still in its packet.
However in my lunch break I did pop into my LMS for some HU116 to paint the above with.
I also managed to order the Tornado boarding ladder and weapon loader.
Tomorrow I am going to use up my Airfix Flying Tokens and order the Bedford Truck and Land Rover.
Items still to get are
More plasticard to expand the diorama area.
Some wood to stick it all to.
Some metal undercarriage legs for the Tornado for support its weight better and some MB10 Ejector seats. |
