Welcome to the Airfix Cold War Jets Group Build, for which Rich is group build leader.  This is the "Chat" thread for the GB and any reference material should be posted in the Reference Section. The GB will run from 1/11/08 to 31/12/08.

Any Airfix military jet aircraft, of any scale, may be built so long as it is representative (nationality, scheme and markings) of an aircraft which saw service during the cold war of the 50/60/70's.

If you wish to take part in the Group Build, you must sign up using the Usergroups link at the top of the screen (above the Log in/Log out link).

Important: Do NOT sign up as a participant of a Group Build if you only want to view the threads!

To take part in the Group Build:

Click on "Usergroups"

In the "Join a Group" section, select "Group Build - Cold War Jets"

Click "View Information"

Click on "Join Group".

I will then approve your membership.

Hi guys, am pretty awful on post ww2 history, & have never built a jet in my life- consequently, I'm struggling to decide what's eligible for this group build- got any suggestions? Preferably from the cheaper end of the Airfix spectrum, as I'm about as Rich as I am good at modelling! Anything in a silver finish would also be a bonus as I've got half a rattle can left from other builds. hmm...

There's a few options for you in 1/72 at around the 6-9 pound mark;

BAC Strikemaster

Gloster Meteor F8

Lockheed U-2

Saab J-29 Tunnan

You can find builds of most of these on the forum and in the galleries.

Also in 1/72 there is the F-86 Sabre (NMF), the Lightning and Canberra and Javelin, which you might be able to find on ebay for reasonable prices as they aren't current at the moment.

Personally I'm trying to decide what to build. I did have my heart set on a Canberra, but the one I have is the US RB57, with decal options for Vietnam and stateside.

I rather think of the cold war being a european based thing - lots of tanks and aircraft staring at each other over the iron curtain dividing Germany. So I'm not sure it's really in the spirit of the GB.

My alternates are the F-86 (again, a bit too Korean?), the Javelin, and the new Meteor F8. I do have some 1/48 Lightnings and Buccaneer, and the 1/72 TSR.2, but looking at them they are a bit too involved for a GB.
Decisions, decisions hmmmm......

Bought a Mig 15 today on the strength of it having a silver finish, I'm guessing that qualifies? Thanks for the suggestions,  might do a buccaneer/Meteor as well  depending on how I get on with the Mig.
Thanks Guys! let me know if the Mig Qualifies- Russian jet from the 50/60's should be fine though I guess?!

Hello Richard.

I think all the airplanes you mention are relevant in this GB.
They all originate from the doctrine of being superior to the opponent in a coming East/West war.

It is funny however no one has mentioned airplanes from the other side of the iron curtain.
If I had not been more than half through my MIG-23 I think it would have been my first choice.

There's the rub! The cold war was global, Korea and Vietnam being part of the drive to prevent the spread of communism. But as I have said before I always really associate the cold war with the iron curtain and the Soviets being intent on driving across the central plains of Germany.

Personally, I was thinking Korea and Vietnam (Suez etc) might be better served with their own GB's, and Cold War Jets limited to those aircraft of the major powers involved in the european cold war, and the aircraft which could have been used in the european theatre.

That's my personal view, but I'm open to suggestions on what line the other participants want to take. I don't want anyone to feel excluded or prevented from making their first choice because of my personal views.

Post your views and we can sort out a set of rules of engagement that everyone's happy with before the start date.

My personal opinion is perhaps a bit different from yours, Rich, but I'm flexible and open to correction... Witness, for example, the defection of the MiG-25 to Japan; the Cuba crisis; the shooting down of the Korean Air 747 in Soviet Asian airspace... alongside the Vietnam and the Korean war incidents. To my mind, these things mean that the Cold War was being fought on all fronts, Eastern and Western. So what does this mean, really? Well, if someone had aftermarket decals for a JASDF version of the Airfix F-15, it'd be hard to argue against them as there's only one reason these aircraft were originally purchased - to keep the Soviets out of Asia.

I agree that Vietnam and the Korean war are good subjects for another GB but that really shouldn't bar, for example, the F-105 being entered in Vietnam camo. It's well within the remit of being a Cold War jet, IMHO.

That's the thing with the Cold War. From, what, 1949 through to 1989, it's tendrils reached every single part of the world into conflicts all over the globe at all times. Pretty much every conflict had the CIA and KGB involved somehow (Iran/Iraq; Afghanistan; Laos and Cambodia).

I know, I know. It doesn't rule a lot out, really, does it?!

I'm more than happy to go with a general world view, it means I can build my RB-57   .

So in summary; that's any Airfix military jet aircraft, of any scale,  representative (nationality, scheme and markings) of an aircraft from the cold war of the 50/60/70's, from the powers involved in the cold war or arms race that accompanied it, and including conflicts directly related to it e.g. Korea, Cuban missile crisis, Vietnam.

Whew! That's quite a sentence! Hope that's OK with everyone!

os it service started in the same year (on where you read the cold war ending) as the cold war ended.

both planes development and roles are from a cold war perspective in my honest opinion, and both still fall in the cold war time scale, and development started in the 70s for the flanker b.

This is why single subject GB's are soooo much easier . According to a lot of places the cold war extended up into the 90's, which doesn't really exclude anything!

The Flanker prototype first flew in '77 so was concieved and designed in the early 70's. Which is why I thought that was OK, who wants to do an F-15 and cross my palm with silver?

How about we put a period limit of Stalin to Leonid Brezhnev (45-82), the aircraft had to be designed and flown within this period?

I'm off to find some paracetomol - my head hurts!
