P.S. I like your lego paint stand. Was going to copy you, but have just found out my mum gave away all my old lego blocks. |
The silver on your Mig looks good to me, Mark, the streaks on mine show up more now I've coated it with klear. Fortunately the worst ones are on the underside.
Pity your mum gave away your lego blocks they were my favourite toy when I was a child and I've never wanted to give them away. _________________ "It's life Jim, but not as we know it!" - Dr McCoy

Not much progress this week, was assembling flat pack furniture over the weekend. Since then I've masked up the tailfin and put a couple of coats of H60 on, should be ready for the H19 topcoat now.

Nice idea with the Lego jig. I would be tempted to do that myself but I fear I would only end up building hundreds of Lego models!! _________________ 60% of the time it works every time.

Made a little more progress, the tailfin has been given a topcoat of H19. Unfortunately the red peeled a bit in a couple of places when the masking tape was removed so I had to apply touch ups freehand, and the model has had three coats of klear.
I've also partially completed painting the wheel well doors, H56 on the inside and H64 on the outside ready for the H11 topcoat. _________________ "It's life Jim, but not as we know it!" - Dr McCoy

Unfortunately I haven't made any further progress yet, I was going to apply the decals last week but they turned out to be totally unusable. They appear to have a glossy carrier film but this is a varnish layer on top of the decal I think as after I placed them in water they had a much larger carrier film than was visible when dry, and as soon as they touched the surface of the model they stuck fast and would not move at all. This meant I couldn't adjust the position of the decal after placing, this is something I need to do as I never get it in the right place straight off the backing paper.
I'm currently tracking a couple of Xtrakit Meteor F.8's on fleabay, the plan is to use the Xtrakit decals to finish this build if I manage to win one of them! (And I'll be able to build another Meteor sometime in the future too!) _________________ "It's life Jim, but not as we know it!" - Dr McCoy

Hey Badwolf, sorry to hear about the decals, mine seemed ok but slightly on the thick side.
Lookling at my Xtrakit Meteors they look alot thinnner and slightly less carrier film so you should have more luck with them. _________________ 60% of the time it works every time.

I've made a start on the decals over the last couple of evenings, I assumed somewhat naively that the tailfin markings would have been printed the exact size of the fin. In fact they are slightly too large so I've had to wrap them around the fin, only found this out when applying the decals to the model.
I still have some work to do getting the decal to settle down over the trim tab actuator then touch up the red and blue along the edge.
Progress so far...
Apologies for the poor photo, the light wasn't very good today. _________________ "It's life Jim, but not as we know it!" - Dr McCoy

Finally got the decals on, even the Xtrakit decals gave some problems. The full colour decals like roundels and tailfin markings went on no trouble, but the black markings (serials squadron codes and walkways) still tended to grab, so some of these are not positioned correctly. I haven't bothered with all the tiny stencils, I think they are a waste of time in 1/72.
The model so far:
I managed to destroy one of the inner wing walkway decals trying to adjust its position, it was stuck and didn't want to play.
Luckily I found these old dry rub transfers in the cupboard and made replacement inner wing walkways with them.
