I will be building the Airfix 1/72 Meteor F.Mk.8, using the Extradecal sheet X72-057 to build an example from 56 Squadron, RAF Waterbeach in 1953 _________________ 60% of the time it works every time.

Apologies for the late start. I cleaned the parts on the sprues in hot sopay water the day before the built was supposed to start and took the pics below but was going to wait until I'd finished my Do17 before starting.
Any way long story made short I got admitted into hospital on Bonfire Night with an infection (nothing too serious) and was only discharged yesterday.
Here's the obligatory sprue shots:
One thing I will say about these is that the wing halves and one of the fuselage sides seemed to have been snapped off the sprue so they could fit in the box. The point where they were snapped is very close to the plastic to be used to build the model and in some cases could lead to a bit of filing needed to be done when parts are joined together.
Why couldn't Airfix have used a biiger box like Xtrakit to avoid this?
Instructions, decals and boxart:
Building will start proper tomorrow. _________________ 60% of the time it works every time.

Here's where we are at the end of today.
Cockpit tub and console built:
And here's the kit seat that I'm using:
I decided to use the kit seat because it seems most people are replacing it for the much more accurate Aeroclub offering and I thought I'd show everyone here what the kit example looks like so they can make up their mind whether or not to order a replacement seat when they build their kit.
I think this cockpit will look great once it's painted and a wash and some dry brushing is done. _________________ 60% of the time it works every time.

Thats one big decal sheet, you'll have to get a few more kits to do all the options _________________ Cheers

Nice start there, Paul. I'm not really sure if a wash will be noticable in this cockpit, given that the base colour is supposed to be black. Just a thought... _________________ "It's life Jim, but not as we know it!" - Dr McCoy

It certainly is decent value for money (can't remember how much it was) as there are 17 schems on this one sheet.
I also have sheet X72-071 whic is Xtradecal's sheet for foreign Meteors and that has 13 schemes.
If you combine the two sheets add the 3 schemes from the Xtrakit boxing and the scheme from the Airfix boxing (I know it has two but one scheme is the same as one of the Xtrakit schemes) that leaves me with 34 options to build with only 7 seven kits (the one I'm building plus 6 Xtrakits).

lol. I realised after I posted it that I was going to paint the cockpit black and a wash really wouldn't show, especially in such a small scale, so I'm going to skip the wash and go straight to dry brushing, probably Hu56 (Aluminium) or Hu32 (Dark Grey).
Thanks for looking out for me though!! _________________ 60% of the time it works every time.

Hi Paul, good start to your kit. At the moment I am on my third, one thing you must not forget is that the kit needs a fair bit of weight in the nose, I wrap pieces of lead in bluetac and stick them in the nose and under the cockpit floor, the undercarriage also needs a little tweak to get enough ground clearance, otherwise a very nice kit, I am still using my decals from the Modeldecal range on mine.

| Glad you reminded me Robin - I'm just starting off on one of these and you've given me a prod to dig my lead shot out. |

One step ahead of you Robin. I noticed in the instructions it says to add 3g of nose weight, plus I could tell by how far forward the undercarriage is that it would be a definate tail sitter.
I usually ignore how much weight the kit recommends and add as much lead sheet (the stuff used to keep things at the bottom of a fish tank) to the nose and glue it in place with superglue.
Just a quick question though; on my model I offered up the fuselage halves and there appaers to be a hole deliberatley moulded into the nose cone. Should this be filled in because there are no kit parts that I can see that should go there and I believe that only a few Meteors were fitted with an inflight re-fuelling probe for trials. Any help appreciated thanks. _________________ 60% of the time it works every time.

Hi Paul, re the hole in the nose cone. I have had a look through my Warpaint book on the Meteor, and in several of the photos there is a hole in the nose, don't know what it is for, possible gun camera, so I have put it in the two F8s that I have built, not the Prone Pilot or the Martin Baker versions though.

| isn't there a similar hole in the Hunter nose. That i don't think is the gun camera, as it is a bit higher- i think it might be an air intake - will check references later. |

Hi Paul and Walrus, the hole in the nose is the cold air intake for the cockpit.

Thanks. Just looked at some scale drawings in the Meteor Datafile by SAM and the hole appears in them but without an explanation as to what it's for.
Forgot I had this book lol, the answer was in my bookcase all along!!
Thanks again Robin. _________________ 60% of the time it works every time.

Hi Paul, with regard to your seat, I notice that you have overlapped the seat pan and the seat back, I have butt-jointed them, makes the seat a little deeper, I have then made up two seat cushions to fill the empty space, makes it a little more interesting. Just dry brushed the black cockpit with a little dull silver and finished off with a few spots of yellow and red using a toothpick. Then glue the fuselage halves together and leave overnight.

The instructions are a bit vague about how to assemble the seat so I did what I thought they were asking for.
For my next 6 in the stash I will probably use your technique to make the cockpit more interesting or buy some Aeroclub replacements.
Work has been progressing on this. Cokpit, console, tyres and engine parts have all been painted Hu33 (Matt Black) and the engine intakes have been painted Hu53 (Gunmetal).
I'll post some pics after I've dry-brushed the cockpit detail. _________________ 60% of the time it works every time.

Hi Paul, for the tyres, I find that Hu67 (Matt Tank Grey) is much more convincing. I now have to decide which Squadron it will belong to.

I put as much shot/white glue as I could cram in under the cockpit floor and behind the nose wheel bay. The model is quite heavy but is not a tail sitter.
If you use Aeroclub seats quite a bit needs to be removed from the base, otherwise the hood won't fit (and you know how I found this out don't you?!)
