Hope the exam goes well.    The Sabre is looking good, it'll be interesting to see how the foil will look.

I won't know about the exam for a few days-- so in the mean time...

This process is described fully in Mirage demo build I did (look in the demo builds section for it). I'm putting the "shiny" side of the foil "up" because I'm going to tone this down later with a clear coat.

This is a very hap-hazard process.  I used to think that I had to make each little piece of foil match a panel on the actual plane.

Pffffftttt.....

I don't know where I got that demented idea... but I'm certainly not going to do that any more than I'm going to reproduce all the turnbuckles on a 1/72 scale Albatross.  I just cut little chunks of foil and put them on in a crazy-quilt manner.  I try to be reasonably neat about it.

I cannot try to match panels or anything even remotely like that.  I just want to be able to make something that looks like metal without an airbrush and I think this works.

Ayup Dan...

Looking through some old FSMs, I'll think you'll find that 'One panel at a time Madness', Demented though it is, IS the actual Idea !

If you just wrap the thing up in a roll of the stuff, it'll look like some GIANT Hoagie... (Hmmm... Hoagie...)

But kudos to you for doing it, though. does the adhesive allow you much give to move it around a little and so forth...?

The adhesive is really peculiar.  It allows you to put it down and pull it back up a number times before "bad" things (adhesive comes off, foil tears, etc.) will happen.  So you can re-position it.  But if you put it down and pick it up one-time-too-many it will leave the adhesive on the model and this will create visible lumps under the foil.  To demonstrate this I lifted the foil a number of times on the starboard side of the vertical tail, leaving some lumps that can be seen under the foil.

The "panel by panel" idea is wonderful for those that can manage it-- but I know my limitations.

Well, it's finished, but something doesn't look quite right.

Hey!  Wait a minute...

Oh my!  It looks like we've had a bit of mix up!

Now where did I put that model???

Ah.  Here it is.

Well, it was an easy enough mistake to make!

A few more bits to add and then it's on to the decals.

...and lunch.

Thanks for the kind words.

More progress...

Photographing these "metal" planes is very difficult (for me!).  This image shows more what it really looks like.

I've already applied a clear coat to "cut" the shine a bit--but not as much as on the Mirage.  These aircraft were polished.

That looks great . I'm going to have to find a cheap throwaway kit in the stash to practice that on .

More fiddling about.

I was very unhappy with the Superscale decals.  They seemed incorrect and incomplete to me, after looking at photos of 97th FIS planes and at a 48th scale decal sheet from Cutting Edge.

Hmmm..I guess I should do my research BEFORE building the kit and applying the decals! Think

So I had to try to "fix" the "dragon" (or whatever that red thing is) and I'm not sure I was 100% successful but it's close enough.  I cut those two "swooshes" on the tail from red decal film and added them.  I also added a little white stripe (decal) around the radome

That white stripe was A LOT of work for such a tiny thing.
Keep an eye on me--if I do enough of this I might take up SHIP MODELING!!

I'd also like to know this:

Why is it that certain decal makers include instructions that seem to have been printed on a thirty-year-old copying machine at lowest resolution??  What's up with that??

Great looking build!  My dad's first aircraft after pilot training was the F-86L, basically an F-86D with slightly longer wings.  I've got one of these D's in my stash and have been trying to build up the courage to start it.  After seeing the nice finish you got with foil I might have to give it a try myself.

By the way, how'd you come across the aftermarket decals?  I may have to go a similar route since my airfix one's are pretty old.

Ebay.  I get most of my decals this way.
