The Canadian Banshees were all the "long" F2H-3 version.  This is the earlier, shorter (8 ft shorter) one.

So...uh...

I will not make excuses such as the terrible winter, cold basement, demands of school or any other excuses that a lesser modeler might use.  I will use the excuse that I was kidnapped by anarchists.

Anyway, I'm back at it again.

Being anarchists, they couldn't keep me against my will.  Got away on a technicality, you might say...

Today's activity consists of some sanding and polishing, using the gadget I described in the F-86D thread.

Now it needs some time to air-dry.  Nothing ruins a painting session like a big ugly water drop crawling out of some fuselage orifice!

Slowly making progress.

Here's the model with most of the exterior painting completed.  The paint is Polly Scale Flat Dark Sea Blue.  It will get several coats of Klear to make it very, very shiny.  The "sealant" on the canopy is just a very thin strip of white decal.

The "silver" on the leading edges of the wings and tail is a problem to paint if I want to comply with Dogma 72 (no spraying, no masking).  I considered using foil but decided against it because

1)  Foil might not work well if applied over paint.

2) Foil might not adhere if applied in thin strips.

3) From photos it looked like the "silver" was actually PAINT (believe it or not).

I finally found a way to do this.  I discovered this thing.

A very cool tool.  It's a Sharpie felt tip permanent marker in SILVER!  It writes in silver!  Can you believe it!

Well--it amazed ME.

Here's the really cool part.  You can paint silver lines that are (more or less) perfectly straight using a straight edge like this steel ruler.

Neato.

Decals applied.

These decals were a joy to apply--but only because I applied each one to some wet Klear (a technique I learned on this forum) so they would conform to the model's surface without silvering.  If I hadn't done this, then they may have silvered because they're quite thick.

But so what?  The thickness gives them that magnificent opaque quality that allows white markings on a dark, dark blue.

Not a trace of yellowing, either.

I didn't notice until it was "too late" that there is a red band on the top of the tail.  So I used a bit of red decal for that instead of painting it.

fin

This model was almost the victim of the malady most dreaded by every modeler-- the last minute goof!  That's the kind of situation where you pick up the rattle can of clear flat to complete your masterpiece, only discover a moment too late that it was flat white...

In this case, I applied a final coat of Klear using a brush that had been used to apply some Polly Scale flat aluminum.  Unfortunately, it hadn't really been cleaned as it should have been.  So now the banshee has a lovely "metallic flake" look.

I had hoped this would be a model that would look good from a foot away, but I'm back to earth now, where I belong.  It's still a pretty good two-footer!

MORE PHOTOS IN THE GALLERY!
