|
|
Welcome to the Airfix Special What-if GB, for which Rich is group build leader. This is the "Chat" thread for the GB and any reference material should be posted in the Reference Section. The GB will run from 1/12/08 to 31/01/09.
Any Airfix kit, of any scale, of any type, may be used in this GB. There are two parts to this GB, the first is the backstory, this should be an introduction and explanation or story of what you intend to build e.g. "The TSR.2 was never cancelled and entered squadron service and was used during the Falkland's war and the Gulf Wars." The more extensive and convicing the story the better.
The second part is the actual build of the kit. So long as an Airfix kit is used as the base, parts may be used from other kits, aftermarket accessories, resin, photo-etch, decals etc.
I would just request that the subject be a feasible possibility or have a similar working precedent or be based on suggested concept idea, rather than just being the contents of the spares box glued to a random model!
If you wish to take part in the Group Build, you must sign up using the Usergroups link at the top of the screen (above the Log in/Log out link).
Important: Do NOT sign up as a participant of a Group Build if you only want to view the threads!
To take part in the Group Build:
Click on "Usergroups"
In the "Join a Group" section, select "Group Build - Airfix Special What-if GB"
Click "View Information"
Click on "Join Group".
I will then approve your membership.

I'm in!
I see a mid 1945 production variant of the Churchill Gun Carrier, (Built on the Airfix MkVII chassis. ) in the offing.....Or maybe even something just a bit more outlandish!
All the best

Sounds interesting. I can see it now, NATO didn' t buy F104s and went for Lightnings instead. _________________ So many kits, so little time |

Are we allowed to start planning, and making drawings?
Or are we supposed to wait with all our planning, and scratching head until the ‘GO’ signal?
I have so many ideas right now; it’s hard to wait with the planning process.

Jesper, plan and draw as much as you want, it's only plastic that can't be touched until the go date. I suspect people will need to get supplies etc ready for the build given it's non-standard format.
Challenger, a Panther in Africa markings would be acceptable, you'll just have to invent a what-if alternative timeline to enable it to happen!

| I'll be doing a TSR2, as the A&AEE test aircraft for the Skybolt Air Launched Ballistic Missile. The missiles will be from the Sharkit kit. As for livery, I'll be basing the colours on Buccaneer XN923 when it was at the A&AEE. This seems to be based on making the original white colours more visible, with blue and dayglo orange on the nose, tail and wingtips. |

I'm just pending a kit before I sign up - I do have an idea though.
A common theme really - I think it's fair to say most know the story of the Supermarine Spitfire - started out with a 1,000 hp Merlin and finished with a 2,200 hp Griffon engine.
And the Bf109 - Daimler Benz powered with the Spanish making the Bf109G under licence as the HA-1112 'Buchon'- a Merlin engine mated to a 109 airframe - so what if they finished the series with a 2,200 hp Griffon powered HA-1112?
Should be quite interesting with a realistic possibility seeing the same upgrade the Spitfire got. _________________ the evolution of the modern car is such it now ressembles a toaster. |

...They would have needed a tricycle undercarriage, that's what!
Seriously, I'd imagine a much-beefed up undercart would be required, with a larger tail or dorsal fin to restore some directional stability. Five-blade prop or contraprops. The bubble canopy from a late Avia 199 would probably be a good idea as well - anything to allow the pilot to get his head a little higher to see over the nose for landing!.
Go for it, I say. What kit are you thinking of taking the nose from? |

Looks like you and I are thinking along the same lines, I'd already catered for the wider wheels - tall tail of late G series and contraprop to counteract the torque that would overcome full rudder with a single directional prop. You mentioning the Avia bubbletop - you've reminded me I do have one.
Yep, just dug it out - the Falcon Clear vax series for all 1/48 109's. (Set no 50). http://www.falconmodels.co.nz/clearvax/set50.html
Nose section to come from an Airfix 1/48 Seafire F47 - body section Airfix 109F - Tail section to be an Academy 109G-14 and wing bulges for wheels from Academy kit too. Falcon Clear Vax Avia 199 canopy (thanks for reminding me about that). Considering engine weight the body may need to be extended back further from front of cockpit back - so I'll so what comes up from the drawing board - all things considered.
Could you imagine this in a 109 airframe? (see video of Mk58)

err....?
I've seen pics of the biplane hurri- forgot the name of chap who designed the upper ferry tank wing - Hilson Wing* that's the chap!
but a spit? elucidate if you please my dear Topgun
*I bet Hewman 100 has already got one in his collection, eh Ian! there is a resin conversion kit available for it
Thanks to dogfight doubles and Spanish Civil War talk i thought what if the restriction to supply aircraft trearty that the Fascists so conveniently ignored was waived and Hurricanes could be supplied to the Republicans. It depends on whether i want to sacrifice one of my two 1/72 kits or use my only 1/48 kit or buy another or more for the stash. could use the one in my spares box (the mk1/2 kit)
would look really cool in the republican colours + camo. but would a fabric wingand Watts prop be needed? |

Go on - I'm sure there's some wild stuff to do with a spit - this was another idea just for fun - the answer to the Dornier 335 - there's whole load of options for practically anything.

But that's ridiculous, Topgun- I might as well say, "what if the Hurricane was a biplane!"
hmmm ...okay, it would have been a Fury...
that is quite something Hangertime! in my opinion, it would look even better with a radial engine as a pusher. probably because the proportions would be more pleasing if not as symmetrical. but it still looks cool |

That's the beauty of What-if, pretty much anything goes, the back story is just as much fun as the build! Can't wait to see some of these!
