|
|
Since Alan Hall was a big influence on most people who slap styrene together, particularly on this side of the pond, can I propose a JOINT "tribute build" with Britmodeller and the UAMF. Not sure exactly how we'd run it across the sites, but I'm sure it could be done. At the end, we could put together a book like the Maurice Landi tribute produced by the UAMF last year. If we ran the GB from Jan-Jun, that would give us time to get the book together for SMW2009...
I'd suggest that the build should be a conversion done by, or inspired by, Alan Hall. It could have appeared in Airfix Magazine or SAM, and it should be done, at least to a certain extent "old school" (ie carved balsa, stretched sprue, crash moulding) rather than with all the latest resin bits and pieces. Maybe it could be in markings featured in a Warpaint book. I say "inspired by", because everything I've ever seen by Alan was 1/72 scale, and those of us who prefer 1/48 might want to reproduce his conversion larger, and ditto for the 1/144 fans, smaller...
bestest,
M. |

What, nobody up for this?! Come on peeps let's do it, we have two forums that are saying 'we're in', but no response from the ATF. I am pledging to seek out all AWH articles from my loft archive and make them available to anybody who wants to run with a build. This will be no mean task, since it will involve sifting through dozens of magazines, some dating back to 1961. I will put together a list of all the conversion articles that I can find so that you can choose whatever you fancy, then I will e-mail you the requisite article. But please, no badgering for this until after Telford weekend.

I'm more than up for it, although I'm pretty sure my meagre efforts won't be "book worthy," It'll be my first conversion. If this forum doesn't take part I'll join the fun on BM. _________________ --.. --- -. . / -.-. .- .-.. .-.. / .-- --- --- -.. |

I'm certainly up for this too. I agree this would be a very fitting tribute. _________________ Bubbly! |

Matt,
You can count me in, if peebeep can find something suitable for me to have a play with.

The Stirling Mk V appeals the most, but I don't really have room for the assembly of such a leviathan right now!
I also rather like the sound of a Merlin engined Beaufighter II.....If one was truly nuts, one could presumably even go a step further:
http://www.hyperscale.com/features/2000/beaufightervds_1.htm
I'd never heard of such a thing!
For what it's worth, all the best

PS - Did "Cat's-Eyes" Cunningham really fly a MkII? Are there profiles? If so my decision is made! _________________ ATF Unverified Spam Appreciation Society - Founding Member

Having never ever tried doing a conversion on a kit, I'm a bit tentative on saying yes. However, I had planned on getting a CMR Avro York kit for a spare Lancaster I have sitting around. If it's not horrendously difficult, I might be interested in the one listed above by peebeep.

The ATF will certainly take part in the multi-forum tribute to honour Alan Hall. The ATF GB will be of Airfix kits with conversions from the Airfix magazines, so get your obechi sheets, balsa and talcum powder/dope ready!
Sarge, I believe the Rapide was submitted for the same Air Ministry requirements as the Anson - you could do a Rapide conversion with a scratchbuilt turret .
I'm interested in the Anson conversion to an early Mk.I, it involves smash molding a new transparency. Anyone know where to get hold of suitable acetate?

The Avro 504 to a Soptwith baby sounds challenging.

How about the method of building up a canopy using clear nail polish over a balsa mould? |

Be still, my beating heart!
Nope, it will be a Beaufighter II for me, probably from 307 Squadron (Polish) as that is all I can find in the way of profiles.....What will I need to mutilate for the correct Merlins I wonder?
All the best

The idea Sarge, is to do it AWH style, so get some balsa wood, talcum powder, dope and start whittling!

It was my understanding that the Merlin "power egg" used for the Lancaster was so chosen because it was already in production for the Beaufighter. I would think that it would need little, if any, alteration (but that's wishful thinking, I know).
Edit: If you convert TWO Beaufighters into Mk IIs with Merlins, you could convert ONE Lancaster into a Mk II with the Hercules engines. |

Not the way I wield a razor saw.....I'll be lucky to get one Beaufighter II out of a Lancaster and two Beaufighters!
