Got out my kit today.  It is from the VJ-DAY set. The decals are slightly out of register so I hope to replace them with some from a  TECHMOD sheet.  The kit I thought was very well done and detailed. The parts appear sharp and very well moulded.
Soon be time to make a start. It'll be a yelllow-winged bird!
keep looking in!

quite looking forward to this one since. like many others, I have had a very bad cold/bronchitis for the last fortnight. Just haven't  felt like glueing plastic together!!

I have made a start at assembly.
The wings have been cemented together and have come out quite well. I have not made them in the folded pose. They do require careful adjustment during the cement drying stage. It is a pity that the leading edge of the outer panels is the point where they are attached to the sprues. When removed from the sprue the corrugations on the leading edges are damaged. however it is still possible to rectify this with careful filing with a swiss file.
I have assembled to the cockpit parts and seats - all OK without problems.
But then I have come across a part No.19 shown in stage 3. How does this fit? what is it for? any help will be gratefully appreciated here.
Photos later.
Ron.

Ron,

From what I can see part no.19 has no relevance to this kit.

I think it fits at the back of the cockpit opening to in fill where the machine gun goes.
The instructions arrow points in totally the wrong place.
Sorry I cannot upload photos at the moment to show.

Mark,

Having looked at stage 8 I now think that you are correct.
The drawing seems to have it fitted there.

Well done.

Got the TECHMOD decal sheet 72134A from MFS this morning.
Here it is

Excellent sheet with 6 different prewar Devastator schemes.
One error (minor) is that the six small 'enclosure press' are numbered '8' on the instructions but are numbered '44' on the decal sheet. It took me a bit to work it out.
This sheet costs £5.14 but in my opinion is well worth the price. Makes me wonder why AIRFIX don't get some firm like TECHMOD to produce their kit decals.
BTW I hope to do 5-T-8 Bu.No. 0332, of USS Yorktown (CV-5) in 1939.
More later.
Ron.

I have made quite a bit of progress over the past few days.
Here is the model as at Stage 3 tonight

I completed the interior of the cockpit and have painted it Hu78 and Hu85. The internal parts fitted well. I have used Tippex to fill the shallow join line between the tailplanes and the fuselage.
The fuselage still requires a little Plasto filler on the join line and on the wing leading edges near the root.
I haven't permanently attached the arrestor hook because I find that it will click in place and can be painted up with white stripes and added at the end of the build.
This will have to wait until after the holidays now.
The AIRFIX Devastator kit is one of the hidden gems of the Airfix Range and I am so glad that ATF decided to run it as Group Build. I feel sure that it will look good with its silver fuselage and yellow wings, together with an all-red tail unit - and then the TECHMOD decals will finish it off nicely.
Thanks for looking in.
Happy Christmas to all.
Ron.

Got the canopy parts on yesterday. I used epoxy resin to glue them in place (Araldite Rapid).
Today I have spent several hours lining the canopy frames with silver decal strip. I am seeing double!
It looks like this now

It'll soon be final painting and decal time. Whoopee!
Hope you like it.
Ron.

Here we are as of this evening.
The fuselage is now ready for decaling. The tailplane and fin have been painted with Hu19 red and the engine nacelle upper half has been painted blue Hu144 (not quite the right shade). The wings have been finished ready for decals. The other parts are complete, e.g., undercarriage units, torpedo, propeller, arrestor hook (still requires further work) etc.,
So it is decal time and then joining the parts together for a final coating of Mattcote.
Keep looking in.

More follows.
Ron.

Ayup Ron...

Excellent building as usual.
Can you tell me what the gap on the underside of the fuselage has fitted in it? the underbelly and Torpedo assy?
