Firefly F.R.4    TW749 of 737 Squadron FAA based at RNAS Eglinton,  Londonderry,   Northern Ireland in October 1949.

It was delivered to the Royal Navy in June 1947 and was at RNAS Eglinton by September 1947.    By February 1948 it had joined  812 Squadron,  based at Ford.    Transferred to 816 Squadron RAN which had formed at RNAS Eglinton on the 28th of August 1948 where it was coded 236/JR.     The Squadron sailed to Australia on board HMAS Sydney in February 1949 and TW749 then joined 737 Squadron which reformed at RNAS Eglinton on 30th March 1949 where it was coded 206/GN.    (The tail code  for Eglinton had changed from JR to GN around the end of 1948).

It was involved in a barrier crash during DLT on HMS Illustrious on the 5th of October 1949 when it lost its under carriage.    It was sent to Fairey Aviation where it arrived in January 1950 and spent a year under repair.    After storage at Abbotsinch it saw further service with 799 and 767 Squadrons from October 1951 onwards.    It was sent to RNAY Belfast on 25th March 1954 for overhaul and then retired to Anthorn on 9th of March 1955 for storage.     Sold to Fairey Aviation on 29th of March 1957 for conversion to a T.T.4.    First flown as such on 26th of September 1958 and was sold to  the Indian Navy as INS118 on 17th of December 1958.

The kit is depicted from a photograph of its barrier crash on HMS Illustrious in a book titled "Flying from Derry.  Eglinton and Naval Aviation in Northern Ireland" by Guy Warner and published by the Ulster Aviation Society.

The photograph shows that a new starboard wing had been fitted (with the new roundels) as well as new ailerons on both wings as the patterns did not match with those on the wings.   A new Silver/Aluminium rudder had also been fitted.    (A number of photographs exist of both Fireflies and Sea Furies with Silver rudders so this was not a one off).

Slight improvements upon suggestion. Not good at washes so I dry brushed on a little light grey.

Also corrected the serial AGAIN Aircraft is N1886 of 806 Sqn FAA.

More close-ups in the build thread.
