Ayup All...

Welcome to the RNAS/FAA GB !I hope you all enjoy it...

I shall be building a fairey Firefly Mk 5 (kit no. 02018) hopefully with the Airwaves Etched sets for the Cockpit and Wing folds... I shall get decals as and when i need them, as the kits are awful ! i have a pic of the aircraft i'm modelling, but can't post it as it's 'protected' under copyright...

Most of all though, lads, enjoy...

Ayup All...

No pics yet, but i've removed the 'Radio Boxes' to keep for use later. (yeah, right)... and fitted the two Cockpit Bulkheads to the cockpit floors in readiness for the first part of PE madness tomorrow... hope there isn't too much work on tomorrow...

I shall also take my recently discovered mini spray of Humbrol primer to work to give the bits on the sprues an overall blast to speed painting up. mind you, the pilots are real naff so the Firefly'll be empty and parked up! my goal tomorrow is to have a P.E. cockpit ready for paint...

Ayup All..

The only thing to report is NO progress i'm afraid... I fitted the rear PE 'Parcel shelf' stupidly thinking the rear PE seat would just drop onto its locating post, and found i've spent more time trying re-bending the ledges along the fuselage side back to 'Level' as the seat's too wide to fit the PE gap...

No matter how much I filed off the PE seat, (and i can almost see through its side) it wouldn't go... and the rear location peg for the cockpit floor starboardside will NOT disappear even under the new ledge on the parcel shelf indicating the fuselage may be warped...

And as well, i eventually broke the great fit on the rear locating bulkhead too, so all in all, a load of bad... fitting that one PE part too early has given me so much hassle... But live and learn...

SO... I've sanded down one of the kits seats. It'll have new plasticard sides. I'll cut off the rear locating pip and use the bulkheads to locate the lot, AND, i'll use 5 or 10 thou plasticard to make a 'New', parcel shelf. There's More than one way to skin a cat... but before doing that, i'll fit the fusleage side PE lattices so i can see if i need to adjust anything else first... sorry if this lot is a bit wordy, but i haven't had a chance in the last 2 days to do anything to put anything right really...

I'm waiting on the airwaves PE sets, so good to know the problems in advance

I have heard its better to paint black interiors a dark grey instead in 1/72 scale, any ideas on how dark

Yes, DON'T fit the 'Parcel shelf' until all below is sorted... do you have the starboard (rear of part no.9)rear cockpit locating pin showing even with the cockpit floor (Part no.5) resting on it?

I shall try Panzer Grey, Hu67, and see where it goes. i've read about Tamiya extra dark Grey being used and a light Black wash over it, details picked out with silver drybrushing and detail Highlights for levers... sounds easier than it looks...

A week in and i've not done an awful lot on my Firefly. I'm nowhere near where i wanted to be...

I'm waiting now for some proper 'Roket' Glue, and some applicator tips to help with the P.E. placement. i shall have to soldier on with my 'Folder as best i can. I'll look at it tomorrow to see what i can do...

Ayup All...

Today i managed to fit the last (for me) bit of 'Extras' in the cockpit assembly of the Fiefly. it was a 'parcel shelf' on the wall opposite the Radio operator. just so it wasn't a blank, flat space.

I've got rid of the ejector pin marks in the wings (need to remove them for P.E.) and filled the wing sinkmarks with Tippex and sand smooth... I've also got rid of a raised area inside one of the air cooler louvres to sit the PE radiator grilles on squarely. whether it will allow the wing to fit properly, i won't know until i try to fit the halves together and given the fun (!) i had with the Instrument panel, (which won't fit, and has been 'Discarded'), well...

Overview of P.E. and bits. white blobs is Tippex...

Dry fit pics. (gone overboard with the tape between the windows, the canopies fit beautifully...

the only 'minor' construction inside before painting are the 'towel Rails' for the Pilots Harnesses and the lap belts. plus refitting of the brake pedals. the fuse inner will then be sprayed Sky Hu90 as per the restored machine, with the PE inner instrument hanging 'Frames' picked out in Revell Anthracite. switches, etc will be gloss with silver drybrushing,

Then the exhaust stacks can be fitted, and the fuse closed... Phew !...

Ayup All..

Not too much progress i'm afraid... I have an issue with the spinner being slacker than a very slack thing in its mount, and even my 'spare' doesn't fit... I'm gonna have to try and make a 'Spacer' to take up the 2mm or so play... and that's for starters...

The inserts for the primary part of the folding wing need major surgery to get sorted, and to get the oil cooler Matrices to fit properly in their respective wings, has needed the location pins to be completely removed, so putting them together is a real pain in the butt. And i haven't started trying to get the PE to fit... and they don't line up anyways, even my 'spare' set...

I NEVER wanted to have to do this much work, ever...

If i fitted the well PE as bespoke, i wouldn't have a wheel well at all, just a representation like the wheel wells in plastic in the Sea Fury that was cut out and boxed in... so, decisions, descisions...

This has gone from a favourite 'Box Art' to a much Loathed kit, i can tell you ... AVOID IT !

Ayup feanor,

Judging by your last post I did the right thing by staying away from PE.

My spinner was ultra slack as well, although I took up some of it I should have taken more. All I can suggest it that you persevere with it but that is probably not what you want to hear right now.

Thanks. I SHALL persevere, as I need to prove to myself that i'm a modeller, not a mere assembler...

I know a guy on ARC built one too, and scratched the wheel well stiffeners. so it CAN be done, even though i don't WANT to... but i think his was in 48th... How did you take the slack on the prop up? did you make another washer.. ?

I opened the slots for the prop blades on the spinner so it would sit further forward in the spinner and reduced the length of the pin at the front of the prop. Hope that makes sense.

Ayup All...

I finally took the Bull by the horns today and dived in !

I made and fitted a 10 Thou Plasticard shim to the front of the Fuselage and took up the slack on the Prop. It now fits square and turns like a Good 'Un...

I also had to butcher the PE Radiator grille to fit, but we got there too. I also assembled the Outer Wing parts and fitted their PE parts too. (Along the exposed wing-fold edge). they were tight as well ! I do Wonder on who took the measurements for the fret... I also Butchered the Instrument Panel i discarded and now THAT fits and is a reasonable representation of the top half at least ! I had to cut off and relocate the fitted joystick, and for some reason it won' stay central and droops to Starboard ! (must remember to show the right Aileron deflected thus !) and so after i've painted the fuselage switch boxes, and drybrushed the radios, etc, and fitted the seat Belts, I MAY be ready to close the darn Fuselage up once and for all ! Pics tomorrow. does anyone know if the seats were painted or Bare Metal? i can't find a pic.

I have an idea that the Fireflies that the RAN used in Korea had Grey-Green interiors. I'm not going to go out on a limb on that, though. I had the privilege of seeing a Firefly fly circa 1987, in fact, it started up right in front of where I was sitting, and the fire crew were there ... it was all very nerve-wracking, I think, for the crew, using the Coffman starter. It was marvellous to see - and though the airshow announcer derided it for being overly-large (I think he said something like - "top speed of 400mph - but that would obviously be in a bit of a dive" ... it looked good. It looked great, actually, and when it landed, it did the hydraulic wing-fold routine. Very spiffy.

I have a build article in an Aussie Modeller magazine from the early '90s, Stu, which I can scan for you if you like. It identifies a few areas that need attention. From memory, there weren't many, and they weren't hard to fix.

... and if you look at this picture, you can see that the interior is green, not black (though it IS Canadian, and it IS a restoration). My judgment would be to go for green, though.

I appreciate what you say about Interiors...

All i've seen, (except one, which i'll come to later) are without exception, 'Black Holes' either being 'Black' or a darker version of whatever green and so on. This is obviously for the Radar operator or WSOs benefit, and not ours.

So, I am using a little License myself to make my own 'version' of 'Captain Eddies' Firefly, (which is itself a restored A.S.6/FR 5 Hybrid, not an FR 5 as per the Airfix kit), which has a Sky interior along with Sky mounting frames on which all the boxes hang. The instruments in their natural black provide a nice contrast. This allows anyone (and Me) to see something of the Airwaves PE set i'm putting in... What's the point of using all that etch, and not being able to see some of it... Nice pics BTW...
