Hi Andy
Sadly my copy of Steve Zaloga's Blitzkrieg is miles away from me in Chelmsford. But my memory is that the Mark IV served in Divisional Cavalry Regiments attached to Infantry Divisions and wore the divisional badge of the parent infantry division on the front mudguard. Of course being the British army they almost always sported regimental flashes too. I imagine they were deployed in the usual squadron/troop way being cavalry and in fact they provided the only armoured support most infantry divisions saw (and which is why their life-expectancy was so short).
Okay I've just looked in the pictorial history of the 15/19KRH and it has a Mark IV entering Belgium with a very large triangle on the turret side (toward the rear) with a smaller figure 4 just to the rear of the triangle. Which answers the question above pretty well . As the Div Cav Regt wasn't a brigaded unit but a divisional asset the tac marks should be white. But they aren't in the picture, either painted over or covered with dust.

Oh Damnation.....I hate British markings!
This leaves me with a bit of a marking crisis.....Red I have, blue and yellow I can scrape a few together, but white!
The only white markings I have (that I can think of) is the small diamonds that come with the kit.
All the best

PS - On top of this it looks like my Matildas will be getting repainted again too! _________________ ATF Unverified Spam Appreciation Society - Founding Member

There may be an imposter here.....
I've got 'em built and undercoated, but I'm down to 50% Airfix parts at present.
However as I'm planning on building another five, I reckon I can redress the balance!
All the best

| Looking most impressive. You're battling panzers with these? Much better to be up against Fiats. Better still to be battling infantry and cavalry. Unless the infantry have "K" bullets for their Mausers. |

Mmmm had another look at the photo this morning and the 12" square white recognition patches (which were sported by BEF AFVs) are very obviously a much lighter colour than the tac marks despite the squares being on the hull and closer to the ground.

Some trawling of the IWMs records produced this photo of the 4/7 Dragoon Guards in France a couple of months before the German invasion, where the tac mark is obviously not white.

Many thanks for your help with this as always David.....I reckon there is now enough supporting evidence for me to arbritrarily declare the tac markings to be red!
All the best

Nice work. It looks like the commander of the right hand one is having a road rage moment. _________________ So many kits, so little time |

If I do go for the camo, it will be in the (probably not entirely authentic) shade of Tamiya IJN Green.....This may be beyond the powers of even the strongest filters to disguise!
All the best

If any of them are going to France, then you don't really have a choice.........

Dubious camo it is then!
My Tiny-Tanks are temporarily on hold as, unluckily enough, one of them has somehow lost it's lisence plate/rear light cluster (at some point prior to me undercoating it).
I'm going to pick up another Airfix Mk.VI kit and build it as a (probably somewhat inaccurate) Mk.VI 'India Pattern', scrounging the part needed and also the smoke dischargers (for a Nunshigum Lee).
For what it's worth & all the best
Sgt.S
PS - If anyone has a spare (Part 13) that they can lend me until I can get a replacement, please PM me. _________________ ATF Unverified Spam Appreciation Society - Founding Member

After much delay, I've accquired another Airfix Vickers Mk.VI to be pillaged as described above.....Unfortunately I don't have anywhere to work on it right now!
For what it's worth & all the best

After even more delay, I've fixed the missing light-cluster and resprayed the offending model.....Next up masking and spraying the camouflage.
For what it's worth, all the best

hmmm..
I await the result with bated breath- re the colour that is, yellow, some sort of grotty green? Please Sarge sort your camera out- if it's got a colour temperature dial or something please adjust it for artificial light. The models look stunning by the way- but my eyes are now feeling like I need to spend some time in a dark bunker somewhere.
Better still take them outside on a dullish day and take photos.
pm me if you want some tips on the camera settings etc and I'll get my son to advise what to do- yes I am equally useless unless I'm taking a photo of an old building. Old building the photo is stunning- a model useless!
cheers Stuart:roll: |
