Welcome to the multi-forum Alan Hall Memorial Group Build.  This is the "Chat" thread for the GB and any reference material should be posted in the Reference Section. Richard M will be the GB Leader for the ATF GB. The GB will run from 31/1/09 to 31/7/09.

This GB is to pay tribute to Alan Hall. In the ATF GB, any conversion using an Airfix kit as it's base which Alan authored in the Airfix Magazine is permitted to be built. No modern resin, photo-etch or vac-form canopies are permitted. Conversions should be "Old School", utilising balsa wood, dope, talcum powder, crash molding and other scratchbuilding techniques.

If you are an ATF member and wish to take part in the Group Build on the ATF, you must sign up using the Usergroups link at the top of the screen (above the Log in/Log out link).

Important: Do NOT sign up as a participant of a Group Build if you only want to view the threads!

To take part in the Group Build:

Click on "Usergroups"

In the "Join a Group" section, select "Group Build - Alan Hall Memorial GB"

Click "View Information"

Click on "Join Group".

Your membership will then be approved.

If you are a member of another forum, and are taking part in the GB on your forum, you are most welcome to post work in   progress reports in the guest wip thread. We would also love to see your finished model in the guest gallery. At the present time, I believe you will have to join the ATF in order to post in the GB - I will be looking at the forum software to see if this can be changed for this GB.

Hi Daniel,
Dope?
It is a clear cellulose liquid used primarily for taughtening fabric on fullsize aircraft, and, on a smaller scale, for tightening tissue on flying model planes.
In this instance it is used together with talcum powder to produce a wood filler.   It works very well and ensures that the grain in the wood is sealed prior to painting.
Alan Hall used it a lot in his many conversions in the 1960s onwards and brought it to the attention of plastic modellers at that time.   It had been used by many others in wartime days when almost all aircraft modelling was done with wooden models. My own experience of it started in the early 1940s.
Hope this of interest.
Best
Ron.

The dope we are talking about is neither a substance to chemically enhance our brains, nor a certain character who inhabits ATF...

Nitrocellulose lacquer ('dope') is a type of varnish used on fabric or paper in order to make it tighten up and stiffen. If you want to buy some, go to your nearest stockist of R/C kits and components, as despite the fact that modellers are inclined to go for more exotic covering material, tissue paper is still widely used.

For the purposes of the Alan Hall GB, dope mixed with talcum powder is an old stand-by for filling the grain on balsa wood to give a surface that is something like smooth plastic, after it has been rubbed down.

Don't be put off from having a go at a conversion, some of them are dead simple, for instance I would recommend the Harvard or Havoc articles for beginners. I intend to do the Havoc conversion as a warm up before trying something a little more challenging.

I'd like to have a go at the P-40 to P-36 conversion, and Peebeep has kindly offered to share the article with me. Just need to come up with a colour scheme. I'm thinking Finnish, or possibly Dutch.

Only just seen this thread and am tempted once I've done the Jetstream for the FAA GB.  I'd like to have another go at the Wasp conversion (did it back in the 70s - not very well I might add) but have long since lost the magazine in which it was described.  I know that Dave Cov scanned a whole load of the warship articles which I downloaded, but I haven't seen that one at all.  Is it available anywhere?

At the risk of transferring the 'dope' epithet to myself, can anyone tell me roughly what the proportions of dope to talc might be? I have no idea what sort of consistency to shoot for.

I read in a SAM on the subject that the consistency, at least for the first application, should be similar to that of bread dough '923.

Just out of interest, how many people over the various modelling forums are participating in this?

'Conversions should be "Old School", utilising balsa wood, dope, talcum powder, crash molding and other scratchbuilding techniques'.

This is my model collection you are talking about. I wonder if a restoration would be acceptable for this group build. I have a Demon (or it might have been a Hart) that I once converted to a Nimrod (obviously not the big one with jet engines - that would involve a rain forest of balsa and enough dope to fill Glastonbury -  it is one that would benefit from some restoration, 'old school' style like everything else I do.

How did you do it? I'd love to make one of those. I have a 10x8 photograph that was in a deceased relative's photo album of a Nimrod flying above a RN or RAN destroyer.

Brews
There was a conversion article in an old Airfix magazine, probably by Alan Hall (I need to check) - the early small format magazine. I can find and scan it if you like. As I recall, the main problem was in straightening the stagger out of the wings. That was in the days before anyone produced a Fury. It also needs a lump of something under the fuselage, hence balsa and dope, though I would never use that now, no matter how 'old school'.

Brews - found it from May 1971, but as has happened before, memory is not up to the job. The article is by Alan Hall (at least I got that right) but the conversion is from a vacform (Rareplane) Fury, not from the Airfix Demon or Hart. Now, of course, there is the Matchbox Fury or the 1/48 Airfix Fury, if you can find either, as a starting point. The dope and talc combination on balsa were used to extend the wings. The undercarriage came from the Demon. So what I did involved rather more surgery than I remembered. I will have to have a look to see what I did with it and how accurately I bothered to do it.
