I've seen tanks being transported on Lowmacs on British metals, but not seen British armoured trains _________________ and was Jerusalem, builded here

I really haven't got a clue when it comes to 'Chuffy-Things' so any help would be greatly appreciated.
All the best

PS - Presumably an armoured train would have two locos? |
I reckon the West Country/Battle of Britain class loco would look good with armour added as they were streamlined anyway. However, production didn't begin until 1945 so it may be pushing credibility a bit.
Count me in on the loco GB. I have several metal loco kits for the model railway so I might even have a go at an Airfix or Dapol on a motorised chassis. I'd definately fit proper handrails along the loco and scratchbuild reversing rods and so on as required.
Cheers

Sarge, the Schools class should fit the Bill The City of Truro was withdrawn in 1931 so would be too old

Alan - nice to see I'm not the only railhead nutter around the shop By metal kits, do you mean things like DJH/Cooper Craft numbers, built from etch? I've never had the guts to approach such things! _________________ Owen

It was indeed, more than one I think, at least one that was armoured is still running today but back in it's 'proper' form.
I seem to recall a lot of info on the net, guns and all. _________________ Pax Britannica

Yeah Owen, I'm a railway nut alright - Joined British Rail in 1977 and been in the industry (Signalling) ever since. Used to love train spotting as a teenager in the days of Deltics, Peaks and so and of course being a BR employee meant free travel (me and the wife went to Italy for 17 days honeymoon on a free ticket - Aldershot to Rimini Return!!). I even had a go on the APT doing passenger comfort under tilt failure condition trials - brilliant train. Pendalinos - whadda mistayka to mayka!
The metal kits were given to me in three shoe boxes at work about 6 years ago by a colleague - he knew I was in to modelling and said he'd never get around to finishing them.
I'm not familiar with some of the names but there are very old instruction sheets for:-
Wills Finecast GWR 44xx Class 2-6-2T
Wills Finecast GWR Hall Class Loco
McGowan Models LMS Class 6P
Kemilway motorising kit for the Airfix BR Mogul
what looks like a DJH GWR Castle Class
There are also at least 2 Pannier bodies in there.
The box also contains loads of wheels, chassis', handrail wire and motors and carbon brushes and loads of other metal bits as well as some really old decals that you apparently soak in methylated spirits to apply them.
It's a shame you don't live closer to me as I would value your help sifting through it all and see what I actually have.
I haven't got enough time for all my plastic projects and SIG stuff let alone my model railway (new house - new loft with no water tanks or cross beams - Yippee!!) and metal kit projects.
Cheers

Count me in on this one guys.
As I've never built a train kit before can someone recommend the easiest and most straight forward to build in the current Dapol range (don't want to dive in at the deep end and get so stressed I never build one again!! ) _________________ 60% of the time it works every time.

The Drewery shunter is even easier - no fuss with the rods
Alan - sounds like you've got a good find there, the Wills Finecast kits are rare items as far as I'm aware, they sell like hotcakes on eBay. Will you use the motorising kit for the Airfix 4F? I've never been one for trainspotting (numbers mean nothing to me) but I enjoy taking the odd picture every now and then. I spend quite a lot of time up on the NNR training to be a fireman and fitter.
The new loft sounds ideal though, plenty of scope for potential. I've just made a start on putting the shed in the garden to its full potential - take a peek in the Cars/Railways forum
Cheers,

Take a peek here if you're seriously after coaches
I have had a look at the GB Calendar, looks like this GB could be off the ground from as soon as March 15th I think it might be time to set up a poll or two _________________ Owen

If you build your Schools as a BR Liveried Machine, then BR Mk.I's would be in order, painted in Green Any of the Cooper Craft Series kits would suffice, or you could buy ready to run kits for a few £'s more. _________________ Owen

My Schools Class will be fitted with boiler armour and an armoured cab.....It will be painted in camo!
Any carriages and other wagons will be similarly modified, so cheap and cheerful kits would suit me best.....I'm thinking of troop cars converted from carriages, MG cars built from wagons, a command car from a guards van, a flatbed for carrying armoured vehicles and so on.
All the best

I've got the Dapol 1/76 Schools Class on the way from MFS.....I'd like to build some (reasonably plausible) bits to accompany it, see my post above.
Remember.....Cheap & cheerful!

You could do worse than getting Southern Region (green) SUBURBAN coaches from second hand triang/Hornby from Ebay
Also there are a lot of Kitmaster coaches which are built and are usually cheap. These can then be chopped about to whatever sort of wagon base you might want, or turned in to suburbsn coaches ( ones with a door to every compartment and no corridor or toilet , window, door, window, window, door, window window ..... you get the drift.
Secondhand Hornby or Triang suburban coaches were sold in all the regions colours but the pattern was nearly always the same. The only ones which varied were the LNER with thier fancy paneling.
Triang are now collectors pieces, so late Triang/ early Hornby is the age to head for. _________________ Pax Britannica
