Sorry LL.
The dope/talc mixture is used on the balsa in a similar manner to filler is used on the rest of the kit. This is to get rid of the grain in the wood.
Make sure the work is done in a very well ventilated area, cellulose dope is very potent stuff!
The first coat of the 'filler' is usually mixed to the consistancy of a bread dough and can be applied fairly thickly.
Once rubbed down more can be applied and eventually a very smooth hard surface can be achieved.
This however is not resilent to rough handling though, you must remember that the core is balsa wood! _________________ Bubbly! |

Looking very good, glad to see those plans going to use.
My only critique is that your photos showed insufficient shavings from carving ... <grin>

Still leaving that transparency alone at the moment.
However after info from Roger 410 the painting has been completed and the gloss applied ready for decalling:
Scheme is Extra Dark Sea Grey/Slate Grey/Azure Blue or my interpretation using Hu79, Hu66, and Hu47. _________________ Bubbly! |

My word Doesn't an unusual paint job (let alone the conversion work) make a difference to the appearance

The aircraft I'm depicting is shown in a profile on the first page of the thread.
It is an aircraft of 51 Sqn, that was used on transport flights to the Middle East and India in late 1945. _________________ Bubbly! |

Making nice progress sir. That scheme sure changes the looks of the airframe. Very nice work. _________________ Jeff S

Yes, I admit it, I'm putting off moulding the nose transparency.
In the meantime she now has her markings on:

I finally took the plunge and made my first attempt friday evening using the electric grill in the cooker as my heat source.
Male and female mould. The female was just a hole through the balsa. Both were coated with a thin layer of vaseline to prevent the plastic sticking to the mould.
One the first attempt (left) I hadn't cut a large enough piece of acetate and wrinkles appeared. The second attempt (right) was going well until the female split and I poked the handle through both male and plastic!
After making up a new female and repairing the male I was ready to try again Saturday morning
Thinking that the clamps were partly to blame for the previous accident I replaced them with drawing pins and this was the result:
Out of the mould:
And finally:
Just a bit of of work to do and the matt varnish coat and it's done! _________________ Bubbly! |

Ayup Ian...
Well done !
Mind you those male and female moulds look like Medieval Torture instruments ! especially in conjunction with the clamps ! _________________ Airfix Member 022... Jolly Boy.
