Shin Maywa are still making flying boats for the JMSDF - one every two to three years and the CL 415 is still in production. Harbin in China occasionally produces a H-5 flying boat so they are still out there.

I've signed up for this GB, looks like it'll be a good one.

I quite fancy having a bash at my first ever 1/48 build, I have a few in the stash, just need to decide on which one it's going to be.  Think

Love this GB.  For an Anniversary build perhaps the Airfix Ju-52 finished in the Float Plane option or the Sunderland as Sandringham. Need to chase down some decals.

Now that would be a sight Heinkel! A Sandringham and a 'C' Class.

All 3 of those have always been the case Brews, & if anything, we're better placed now to deal with them.
You might want to put Beriev into google, they still regularly manfacture military flying boats for Russia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beriev_A-40

This is seriosuly off topic... but...

Brews is pretty much spot on from the technical standpoint and no, George, we don't yet know how to overcome those problems. Compare the cruise speed with that of an A330. 70 kph doesn't sound a lot, but on an 8 to 10 hour flight it's a difference of 700km - or more thanan extra hour of flying time.

The there are serious operational problems. Consider all of the following:

Airports close during high winds. Seaports close in high winds and high seas.

Flying boats are great if you want to go from Blackpool to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Not so hot if you want to go from Paris or Frankfurt to Dallas or Beijing. And an airline will only buy an aircraft it can deploy across a complete network.

Loading/offloading bags from the underfloor in parallel with passenger boarding and deplaning is a bit of a problem unless you beach the aircraft.

Flying boats couldn't easily carry belly cargo in standard containers that are compatible with "Land based" flights for interlining (freight goes through hubs just like passengers do) - and there's a lot of money in cargo!

That's just off the top of my head.

And now, back on topic, I need to have a sift through the stash to find something that wouldn't fit in with any other ideas for builds. If I come up with something, I'll be in! It's usually a good excuse to do an airliner as nobody else seems to want to do them

I'm tempted to join up as I have this Meteor III V1 gift set, and in the meantime I have this R....ll Lancaster to build.

But I'm troubled by a surfeit of choice over display

Option 1: Flying (on stand with V1)
    Option 2: On ground

Option 1 is dynamic, but then i don't get to build the undercarriage and it won't sit alongside my Spit and Hurri. Option 2 is static and a good display option but I understand there are noseweight issues, and then I'll need to build a launch ramp for the V1.

Any thoughts?

Graeme

I built it recently as option 1 as I was too lazy to assemble and paint the undercarriage.

I thought i had put a picture of it on this site but I have'nt up loaded it yet.

The trouble with the flying option is that Meteor looks like it is going to ram the V1 as the stands are mighty close together.

As a compromise build it as option two but cut the hole out for the stand so you can display it on the stand if desired.

A load of blu tack or milliput shoved around the nose and cockpit area should be enough ballast.

PS - I suspect you might need a few Airfix V1s for the 50% rule!

I am trying to source tyres with tread, in 72nd, for my forth-coming Lancaster build but am unable to find anything. I have tried Hannants but where else ...?
Any pointers would be appreciated .

That's the first time I've ever seen "Mach2" and "easy-peasy" in the same post...

I've signed up now, too. I'm going to be doing the Vickers Vanguard, probably in BEA livery.

The Sandringham is by far the simpler task. Just waiting on a response from Hawkeye models on the availability of the decals for an Ansett Airlines Sandringham before I commit.

I have a spare set of engine cowlings and propellers from the Stirling , these will suffice with maybe some engines sourced from Aeroclub. The Ansett Sandringham evidently had Pratt and Whitney 1830-90D Twin Wasps. The spares box may yield a Catalina engine in which case I have another option as I may be able to cast up the four required. Still some research to do, but there is still time.

He 51: You need these: Aeroclub ABE043 x 4

If you have a Special Hobby Fokker DXXI, you might be able to cast some from that (but it would still be cheaper to buy four Aeroclub engines). I was hoping to see that Quickboost or Neomega would have Twin Wasps, but no.

Those extras wouldn't happen to involve a wider lower hull and a certain rarer-than-hens'-teeth kit of a certain four-engined floatplane would they?

If the latter is correct, I might just have to kill you for it!
