Flaps installed and set at an angle ...

Undercarriage to paint/install along with the new treaded tyres.

With the undercarriage installed i willl be better placed to gauge the depth and size of the 'bouncing bomb ' beneath the Lancaster itself,                                                                                                it being over sized purposely for the film to accenuate the bomb

                        Rear turret; FN82 to build

AS you can see with the 'original' in the background, the mock-up bomb bore little resemblance to it
The mock up is more of a barrel in shape so having built the slab sides i now need to put a centre piece in across the bomb to give it that barrel shape but thinking about filling the rest of the shape
Filler perhaps

Hi Ian
It seems that you are building a bouncing bomb Lanc. A good few years ago we visited Dover Castle and they had one of the original concrete prototypes on display. They had retrieved it from the beach where it had been dropped. It wasn't in very good shape. Basically a metal drum filled with concrete- not much metal left I seem to recall but not possibly correct given my memory. I was very interested to see a Barnes Wallis first effort so to speak.
What did draw also my attention was 'Queen Elizabeth's Pocket Pistol' -a huge gun that I had seen rotting years before but now restored on a proper field carriage- magnificent.
cheers Stuart

A difficult photo to take but ...  Pilot its shows that i have glued 'lats' around the inside diameter of the mock-up bomb so it will enable me to then apply filler.
This, obviously when dry, can then be shaped to give it that barrel shape as seen in the film.

I was going to suggest a balsa 'plug' but you've already got it covered.

Thanks for the encouragement lads, this is still relatively new to me, conversions etc, i just used to build'em OOB.
I'm a bit slow but then work does play a factor but i'm getting there

Checking with the reference book and watching the film again ....   transpires that although the Lancasters had treaded tyres they also had the 'fin' vent incorporated into the hub so even though i obtained some Belcher tread tyres   i have now sent for the Shackleton type from Aeroclub which should be more appropiate   .
Filled the 'bomb' this morning so will leave to dry before shaping.

Next willl be the Fraser Nash 82 turret with its twin 0.5 guns, will have to think hard about the glazing on this one ....

Ian, check in with Matt (XN932), I've gone halves on the Flightpath Lincoln conversion with him, it has a twin .5 rear turret canopy, and as he just wants all the Merlin 85's and all I want is the nose (plus bomb aimers window) and fuselage plug, it might be available.

Here's a pic of it on my Avro Nottingham

Robert

Edit: for gun barrels you could get the Aeroclub AG015 set or something from this Armtech set.

This is a rather superb 'what if' that Robert produced:

Having obtained some white metal paddle-bladed props, i didn't want to just superglue them on the front of the engine nacelles
I thought that i would file the original opening for the kit propellers to accept the (white) plastic tubing that would be super-glued to the shaft of the wm prop and could then be inserted into the new opening.

This will at least allow the props to be moved ...

Have just applied another layer of filler into the 'bomb' to take out the flaws.

I make aerials from hair brush & tooth brush bristles and comb teeth, these all come in a combination of thicknesses, stiffness and shapes which cover the whole gambit,

Well having waited for the Shackleton treaded tyres to come i am in a bit of a qandry   ... great detail on the Aeroclub tyres but they are so small( ) I know they are for a Shackleton but i just thought that the size would be compatible but judge yourself in the photo.
Belcher tyre on the right with the kit tyres on the Left. I think i may well have to go with the former ...

That's most strange Ian, John Adams of Aeroclub is usually very accurate with his stuff and I've read that Lancs that got treaded tyres got them from Shackletons because that was all that was available, smooth tyres being discontinued a long time ago.  Does it mean then that all the Lanc kit wheels are the wrong size ?
