I'll be building the Spitfire Mk.IIc MB301 8*D of 807 NAS FAA, HMS Battler, Operation Avalanche - Salerno 1943 from the 2009 Airfix Club Edition Kits.

Sprues etc.

Early work doing the interior and cutting out the insert for the tail hook. Painting of the new wings. The cannon bulge insert is a real pain, would have been much better to have as flat wing, just adding the bulge only.

Some assembly done, some rather large gaps here and there plus sinkholes on the top of the cowling .

The wings are very thick, so don't join the fuselage terribly well, some blending with milliput will be needed. The cannon bulges on the wing aren't up to much. If I were to do it again I would fill and sand the slot flat, then carve the bulge off the insert and just stick it on top.

The tail hook slot insert went in reasonably well, I supported it internally with milliput. The join on the fuselage left a large gap, I couldn't do it any other way and still get the wings to fit.
Filling and sanding next.

Major assembly done and filler/milliput applied and sanded down. I added some details made from plastic card - the re-inforcing plates on the fuselage sides and the hoist points.

These will be sanded down a bit to stop them standing so proud of the surface.

On the underside I added the catapult spools, made from plastic card and rod.

My fuselage halves were warped with an odd twist at about the centre point, that's about the best I could get it. It's a lot more obvious with the prop on, so I'm going to have to do some sanding to get at least the front face flat in line with the tail. In side view it's not really apparent.

I was about to start construction of my third kit in the AIRFIX Club package so I was interested to see what Rich had made of it so far..

Looking at the new wings, which appear much better at first glance, I thought that AIRFIX had got them completely wrong.
First of all they have 1950s thick trailing edges, basically they are far too thick (the Spitfire had sleek thin wings!) and the tips have marked dihedral.  Poor show AIRFIX.  I haven't tested the fit of the cannon bulges so cannot comment on them.

Anyway I have decided that when I build this Seafire I will use the earlier wings (supplied) because in my opinion they are far superior to the new ones.

Just thought that perhaps some members might be interested?

Ron.

It is a bit of a shame about the wings in these kits. Nice to have the engraved panel lines, but the fineness of the original 1970s wing is much better. Incidentally, Aeroclub does/did a replacement wing which is closer to scale thickness and has the 'one piece' trailing edge of the older Airfix wing - I'm going to use one of these on my club Seafire.

You're doing a great job with yours Richard, I look forward to seeing the finished article.
