Ayup All...

In a sense, mine's the easiest i guess...

The Evening Star. plus a coupla wagons to go behind. I've always wanted to build her... plus Mallard, but i don't suppose Mallard was done by Airfix, eh?

(And at time of posting, i haven't checked either...)

Unfortunately not - it might be possible to bash up something using the shell of a Hornby A4, but as far as I'm aware A4 kits are non-existent.

Ayup All...

I made a start on my 'Evening Star' today, not knowing what I would encounter, not having made a Loco or any train before. My greatest fear was 'Warped' parts.. and i did find some...

I started with this pile of Plastic Miscellany, hoping all the pieces were there as most of them were off the sprue when i actually bought it from Lichfields now defunct Railway shop... How i wish i'd put it back and chose another bag...

Your Hero, not knowing what he will encounter...

The Plastics almost white, very soft, short-shot in Important places and sink-marked and ejector-pinned to hell... I do hope it will sit level on ANY kind of Railway track...

First call's the main Loco, and using EMA Plastic Weld isn't TOO bad, but still 'Orrible to work with. and i'm not looking forward to filling all the sinkmarks and etc, with Mr Surfacer 500, which, I feel, is the best way to go...

In Loco Weighbridge-ismus...

The plates that locate the main wheels were knock-kneed, even on the sprues, so a little Judicious bending has taken place, but to the point of 'white' stressed plastic, you know, just as it's about to give up...? But it's all right. as sung by the Travelling Wilburys...

I'm NOT QUITE 'Comin' to the end of the Line'... yet.

After the main Bolier was glued, i decided to let it rest, and fettle all the flash off the wheels... see you in the next post...

Ayup All...

Now fettled, there's only the sinkmarks to fill on the wheels, All of them, which will provide enough entertainment for tonight once the missus has gone home, and will hopefully be fully cured ready for sanding tomorrow. Also there's one con-rod pin-hole to drill... once the con rod is in place on the other wheels, and can be lined up properly. THAT will be done in Daylight at work tomorrow... I shall also fill what's Necessary on the Boiler tonight, which is quite a lot. Tomorrow i also hope to make some Acetate Cab windows from the lid of an Onken Yoggit pot.

I also painted the front inside end of the Boiler black under the Stacks, to avoid a horrible white interior. I painted the Void behind the Access door, and we're here now... sorry for the slight 'Blurryvision' (TM) shot.

Whilst all that lot was drying i turned my attention to the Coal wagon behind the Engine. I've glued 3 sides together, with one loose to locate everything square, and for when i make the Bogies tomorrow. I'm also gonna make and fit a false floor. (I just have to see how high the Bogies sit). I know i don't need to, but the 'see-through' looks not for me.

I also do want to cut the ledges that represent the pipes along the boiler off and replace with 1mm Evergreen, but we'll see how things go tomorrow... THIS is where I am now... So far, so good.

i kind of forgot to mention warpage in my thread, it sounds like mine is in a similar state, as was a dapol prairie tank i built a while ago.
i'm going to try hot water and some sort of jig on mine, and you can always glue wobbly parts in stages correcting any warps as you go.

Ayup Phil...

Thanks for the advice. I've now filled ALL the sinkmarks in the wheels and Boiler with filler, and painted the seams along the loco, and anywhere i thought i needed to with a nice load of Mr Surfacer 1000 in two coats. that'll all be dry for morning, and then i can sand down with my Flexifiles. (medium then fine grades.)

For once, i can't wait to get to work to crack on !    but i need some advice. Do i build the whole 'drive train' up including moving parts, prime, THEN paint, or do i 'Paint as i go' what do you all think?

I would paint as you go - it'd be difficult to paint the frames behind the wheels?

Ayup All...

A little more today..

I cleaned up all the sinkmarks and ejector pin marks filled last night, on the boiler and wheels, (and found some more I'd missed ...   ) but never got round to the Acetate windows... yet. I was looking at Digs' Pug, and thought 'Might as well' so i cut off the ledges that went for steam pipes for replacement... that's taken most of my Afternoon giving me this...

I also made the Bogies up for the coal Tender, and fitted them loosely, but I haven't had time to make up the floor. I also found some MORE nice sinkmarks to fill as well...

All in all this gets me to HERE:

So, more of the same tonight...

And I have to decide whether to use the scale couplings or the working ones...

Decisions, Decisions...

Looking good!  Since yesterdays photos I've replaced some of the hand rails on mine with wire and they look SO much better - it's definitely worth the effort.

Ayup Paul...

Thanks.

I Also cut off the pipe from 3/4 of the way for'ard and will replace this too. I will agree it will look SO much better... I have to replace a couple of the pipe mounts i cut off by accident, but it shouldn't be a Biggie at all.

On the coal Tender i have to extend the access ladder as it should curve over to touch the body.

Can anyone recommend a good book on her OR large Locos please? my collection is severely wanting... Ta.

Ayup Stu...

Looking good so far!

If you're after a book, try this one

Or, if you're after photographs, there's a lot of good archive material here

I'd go with the scale couplings as they'll look much better

I'll go as you suggest with the scale Couplings too. Cheers.

Ayup Feanor,
it looks like you are working magic on this one- not my sort of thing railway engines. Yet at one time this particular one was a regular here on the railway- I should have taken lots of photos!
cheers Stu

There were two 'Stars', Morning Star was the first 9F and Evening Star was the last steam locomotive built by BR (at Swindon)
They were designed by Robert A. Riddles and 251 of this Standard Class freight locomotive were built. All were painted black except Evening Star, which wore Brunswick green normally reserved for passenger stock. The first was built in 1954 and Evening Star rolled off the production line in 1960. They were withdrawn from service between 1964 & 1968

Ayup All...

'Twas a bit of a tough day today...

I was feeling a little fed up with the thought of all the prep i knew i still had to do on the Boiler and wheels. Especially those wheels and Handrail/Tube runs along the sides of it   ...

But i have put my head down and soldiered on. I cleaned up the wheel sinkmarks, to find i need to 'top up' half of them, which has been done, and the ones on the fire and ashes box on the underside. i spent another two hours cleaning up the marks from the 'Ledges' and finally gave everything that needed it a smoothing coat of Mr Surfacer 500 with a hairy stick.

Then I cut a recess for one of the steam safety valves for Its pipe to lay in, (see 1st pic below to the left, the vertical pipe) and compared the diameters of the Slaters solid tubing i had. I found three, and cut appropriate lengths. i fitted the largest pipes first, then replaced the linkage i cut off on the 'Nearside' top of the engine, with rectangular strip then superglued lengths of tubing for the main handrails. I shoulda cut two more mounting points for these, and will when i find something thick enuff in my main modelling box...

I filled in the sinkmarks on the coal Tender, but still haven't made or fixed a floor in. that will be tomorrows task..

And so we have...

This,

This...

And This...

On the last pic the tubing looks a bit way out. that's because i need to make anchors for it. but i have marks for them to be fixed to. And they will level the tubing out...

And i was lucky getting these pics, as my Camera batteries are now flat !
