I will be building an entirely fictional British armoured train.....Operation Sealion for the use of.
I'll be well pleased if can just get the loco done in the time alloted, but various extra bits will also be posted here as and when.
My start may be a little delayed by the rather slow progress in redecorating my modeling room.
All the best

Right.....I've cleared my modeling desk (I still love saying that! ) of bits of pig-sty and drying plantlife, and I've almost finished drooling over my new accquisitions, so I'm in deadly need of some 'Steamy-Thing' building practice!
I have no idea what all the bits are, but there do seem to be quite a lot of them:
I may need a certain amount of guidance with this project, especially with regards to which bits of the loco would be most likely to be armoured.....The cab will certainly get armour plate and I have considered a number of possibilities for armouring the boiler including telegraph poles and the like. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might have been done to protect such a loco?
TIA & All the best
Sgt.S
PS - The 'only mildly disinterested' among you may have noticed that I've also picked up a 'Brake Van'.....Apparently these were important. Mine will probably feature a higher proportion of sandbags and Lewis-Guns than is generally considered normal for the type. _________________ ATF Unverified Spam Appreciation Society - Founding Member

Of Girders & Gibberish!
Construction is underway and I have to say that I'm finding it rather perplexing.....The instructions appear to be written in some kind of foreign language and look like bad photocopies of a not brilliant drawing!
The are a fair few sink-marks and quite a bit of flash on the parts and I've been a bit overzealous in cleaning some of it up.....As a result I've probably filed off or filled in a few things I shouldn't have, as I'm still not too sure where all the various bits are actually supposed to go.
The numerous girders on the wheels are a major source of worry, no matter how many times I read the instructions, they still don't tell me anything that I can comprehend.....My current policy is to try all the bits in different combinations until they seem to fit.
For what it's worth, all the best

Andy,
I feel your pain. Even the old Airfix instructions for the Harrow took a bit of working-out. As for the con-rods - a couple of mine were either missing or short-shot. I tried to fabricate them out of card and strip, but they were very clumsy. I then found that I had a piece of construct or evergreen I-beam that was just perfect for beam depth, but the flanges needed a bit of sanding, which I haven't done yet.
If it will help, I can scan/photo the Airfix instructions, but it may be better if I made a quick video of the construction and put it on Youtube for you, which I COULD do over the weekend. What do you think? _________________ “The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.” Winston Churchill |

Brews.....Any help would be greatly appreciated, perhaps a series of photos showing the correct assembly sequence might be the most helpful way of demonstrating this arcanery!
I've had exactly the same problems with the parts that you describe.....One of the bigger 'con-rods' (Is that the technical term for the wheel girders? ) is more than a bit dodgy and I'm not sure I've got all the wheel pins (Part C) that I need.
Still, it's quite fun to play with!
Many thanks & All the best

Cheers lads.....Pictures are up!
Does anyone know how much of the pipework on the outside of the boiler would need to be accessible for routine maintainence?
I'm planning on adding a flat armoured roof and vertical side plates, probably in two sections. As far as I can tell there is no way to do this without reducing the view forward to almost nothing.
Is it actually important for a loco to have windows at the front.....It's not like it has to steer!
All the best

Nope.....I'm still lumbered with my old lighting, it's fine to work under but awful for pictures, I'll get it sorted eventually.

H Brews,
Was the little narrow gauge train from the Romney, Hythe and Dimchurch Railway? I heard they ran an armoured train during the war, but I've never seen pics.

Apparently, yes. Also apparently, more than one
I wonder how many more times I can write "apparently" in one day. Apparently, I have "apparently" on my brain. |
