sarge, i posted a question about the arch pipes on a rail forum i'm a member of. the replies say that they are probably the steam injector pipes.
fwiw, the pipes are just pipes, and i personally would plate them over, in the same way as water pipes and electric cables are plastered over in houses.

I've just finished the build on my Do.217J-1 and have it jigged up right now.....Once it's dried and ready for spraying up, I'll clear my desk for more work on my train.  Sorry it's taking so long, by my standards I'm actually building quite fast at the moment!

All the best

It's progressed a little since my last post, but not massively.....I'm at the point of adding the armour plate.  I've got a shiny new pin vice, so the next step will be to cut the plates from plastic card, drill about a million 0.5mm holes around the perimiter of each and then plug them with bits of stretched sprue.  These will then be cut and sanded back to represent rivets.

All the best

Ayup Andy...

Why not just take a .5 mm piece of rod, cut it up into TINY bits, and then stick them on...

A more in-scale way of representing rivets would be to use decals.

As feanor says, too flat.....I'm tempted to try the simpler route he suggests, but I just got the pin-vice!

Anyway.....The Dornier is at rest for a while, as I've got to paint figures and that requires summoning up the will to do it (I hate the boring little crotch fondlers that kit companies provide as standard!   ), so I will be getting back to my loco tonight.  I'll probably be faffing around for a while, but expect some more progress pictures shortly.

All the best
Sgt.S

Tank Engine?

I'm adding the armour plate.....Still undecided about rivets, I may need a recount!

All the best

looking good so far, Sgt. S.
But I think you need some, rather large rivets.

I quite agree.....Exactly how I will be adding them remains to be seen.

I have finished the bulk of the armoured shell and given the model a quick undercoat to see how it looks:

Once I'm happy with the appearance, I'll add the armoured cab, before finishing off with rivets, some replacement pipework (or ducting for same) and various other details.

All the best
Sgt.S

I think the armour plate should be secured with hexagonal nuts

Looking good Andy

I will probably be sticking to rivets TBH.....I've come to a temporary halt for want of suitable microstrip, so it's off to the LMS for me tomorrow.

All the best

I know it's too late now    but I'm sure I read somewhere about rivets being impressed from the rear side of the plastic with an automatic centre punch    This gives a constant and repeatable punch creating regular pimples on the outside

Ayup Ratch...

I'm sure you can get a Hexagonal punch for such things in varying sizes...

Here is where I'm at right now:

I've had to fix the cab roof in place which will probably make painting the interior a bit tricky.....I might have to resort to figures to hide it.

All the best
Sgt.S
PS - I forgot to get some more Microstrip!
