|
|
It's coming up to that time of year for the annual campaign GB, so get your suggestions in. To re-cap, we have done the Falklands War and the WW2 Africa Campaign. The suggestions can be for a specific conflict e.g Korea, Vietnam, or for a specific period within a conflict e.g WW2 Eastern Front.
The GB is a special, so any type of Airfix kit, which fits in the chosen subject can be built - planes, trains and automobiles etc.
I'll start with a clean slate so any and all suggestions welcome.

What about D-day and the Normandie landing?
Airfix has plenty of kits suited for this.

Personally I'd love to do the South East Asia campaign. You could build everything from Japanese Zeros, through to Buffalos & then even Sunderlands, Boomerangs, Beaufighters, Hurricanes, Mosquitos, Thunderbolts Catalinas, etc etc...
There's a massive variety of kits you could build from quite a few different nations & it's be a fantastic excuse to get some wonderful SEAC decals out of the the stash. It'd have my vote! _________________ --.. --- -. . / -.-. .- .-.. .-.. / .-- --- --- -.. |

I quite like the idea of doing something modern and suggest the 1991 Gulf War. That would have tremendous scope for land sea and air, Iraqi and Coalition.

How about the Spanish Civil War?
Airfix still have quite number of models in their range which would very suitable.
But then I have suggested this before so don't hold out much hope!!!

Can I put a vote in for the Battle of Britain? Not that many kits, Spits, Hurri's, Stuka's etc, but endless possibilities for dioramas! _________________ "Is there anything you else you need to win the battle?" "Jawohl, Herr Reichsmarshall- Give me a squadron of Spitfires!" |

In order of personal preference of topics that have been suggested:
WW2 eastern front
Korea
WW2 SE Asia
Or, as another suggestion:
WW2 Norway.
Great chunks of the 1/600 floaty catalogue would fit.
Aircraft - Gladiator, Sunderland, Me109, He111, Me110, Stuka?
Not sure what army hardware fits though.

How about 'Wacht am Rhein'/'Bodenplatte'.....Plenty for the wingy and tracky types, if a little short on the shipping.
Malta might also be an option with something for pretty much everyone.....Including some very distinctive Matildas.
Just a thought, all the best

Next year is the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The first Airfix aircraft was a 1/72 Spitfire, the BOB would make a fitting theme for the Airfix Modelling SIG display at Telford in 2010. There are quite a few aircraft that would suit but I agree, the diorama possibilities are endless.
On June 18 1940 Churchill addressed Parliament: “What General Weygand called the Battle of France is over. The Battle of Britain is about to begin."
Just think of the subject possibilities: Dunkerque, soldiers, sailors, airmen, beaches, little ships, BoB, resistance, radar, cars, trucks, rescue craft, convoys, escorts, Polish, Czech, airfields, tanks, AFV, wrecked buildings, trains, trackside buildings, plus as a bonus all of the classic Airfix aircraft.
There should be something in there for everyone.
Just an idea.

The Battle of Britain sounds good, I have a load of Airfix Mark 1 Spitfires that I would love to make up as aircraft from the same Squadron.

I agree with Colin about leaving the Battle of Britain until next year and then going 'all-out' on it for the 70th Anniversary.
I'm sure Airfix have one or two kit ideas in the works for it.
This is something that may be worth considering for up-coming years with other 70th's.
I'd quite like to have a go at a SEAC/FE/CBI build or two. _________________ Bubbly! |

I like the idea of the SE Asian theme.
Would there be enough interesting subjects in the Soviets in Afghanistan? I realise you'd be struggling for naval subjects. |

This week is the 65th anniversary of D Day, also the final battle of Monte Casino and the fall of Rome.
Next year will be the 70th for BOB (September), 65th for VE (May) and VJ (August), and, often forgotten, the 65th of the Burma Campaign.
2011 will be the 20th anniversary of the first Gulf war, 2013 the 60th of the Korean, 2015 the 40th for the Vietnam war.
There must be many others.
Plenty of scope for us model makers, but so very sad that no one 'learned the lessons' (how I hate that phrase) of the Great War.

I'm with Fluff75 - Spanish Civil War sounds great, and it IS the 70th Anniversary of its end. _________________ “The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.” Winston Churchill |
