Having read this topic, which kit would you chaps recommend?
My dad worked on them in the  early 70s up in Kinloss so if any of the kits came with the right decals etc. I could do it for him as a gift. I thought Id do a Nimrod too, likewise in whatever scheme is Kinloss circa 1972.

The Sanger 1/48 vacform kit is available again if you fancy a challenge!

You really have no choice.  All the 1/72 injected moulded Shackletons are from the original Frog moulds.   Probably your best bet for getting a clean, crisp moulding is an original one moulded by Frog.   after that I'd got for the Revell boxing of the kit.

There are 1/72 and 1/48 vacforms available too from Sanger if you're up for those.

David

If you check Hannants website, they're listing all three of Sanger's 1/48 Shackletons now (vacuform with white metal parts) plus the MR.1 in 1/72.

If you're quick, you might be able to get one of the Novo kits, these are just a bagged kit, no decals or instructions and going for quite cheap I think (it's the Frog MR.3 kit that Revell now issues) I got a bunch of these a couple of years ago as Hannants was selling them then for GBP 8.00, GBP 19 + now

The Sanger vacforms are eminently buildable by the way - the Shackleton MR3 was the first vac I built and it turned out fine. These have some very nice metal parts with them, although due to a certain amount of commonality between the variants, both the MR2 and MR3 need a little bit of modification to make strictly accurate versions

I built this around 12 years ago when Revell first re-released the old Frog kit.
Due to the badly formed parts (and the AEW version was my favorite) I used the Aeroclub conversion and decals.
It was my first conversion and pretty easy really.
Dont know if the conversion is still available though?

That looks fab Baggy!  I'll be chuffed if I can get even close to that quality.
I may have tracked down a Frog, so fingers crossed.

I found a Frog, parted with some credit cardness and it is on its way! I looked on Hannants and they have some metal engines and props for about a tenner, anyone think they will be worth changing? Any other bits useful? Im not doing the AEW though. Cheers, Bazza

The Frog has arrived.  It is older than me!!!! Quick rummage through the box and one of the props is missing, so I'll go for the metal ones. Cant find any flash and the fuselage fits together very well, so thanks David for recommending the Frog version
But my god, what a lot of rubbing down those rivets need!!!! I reckon if you scaled them up they would be 2" high!
Can anyone recommend where to get decals for it from? For either Kinloss squadrons c.1970-2, but not the AEW versions (dad didnt work on them much) Those in the box wouldn't survive, too far gone now.
Also where can I get some better wheels from?
Cheers
Bazza

Me again.
Gearing myself up for the build. Awaiting delivery of the metal engines/props, and have found a pic of a Kinloss based example taken in 1970 thanks to a chap at avroshackleton.com   so I can base the build on this one.
Ordered the decals to match, and a resin interior set and flaps set. I cannot find any better wheels so if anyone knows of any????
If I wanted to do a record of the build on here, which forum should I do it on? There are so many and I am easily confused.
Cheers
Bazza
