It's not a commentary on intelligence rather than the effect of mass usage of something that's incorrect being incorporated into common language.

ooopps seem to have started something here.
ME110 or Bf110 everybody seemed to know what I meant. As for the mass usage of something that is incorrect being incorporated into common language - well military history (or should I say popular military history) is the place to be. Take for instance 'Blitzkrieg' what is it? what was it? Its a nothing term - a humpty dumpty term - it can mean anything and at the same time mean nothing. whatever description of Blitzkrieg anybody can come up with I can assure you its wrong.
Big Book of Military History - page one, rule one - most of popular military history is based on myth. Its not wrong, but its also not right; its based on mythic and popular (and politicised)  readings of the past. So I say as I zoom off into the sunset in my ME110

Well PubZombie there are some rather sweeping statements there.
'Blitzkrieg'  is a very accurate description of a method of battle not previously used to any great effect. It is lightning war, the method of warfare carried out by a highly intense attack which is continuous until the defender is defeated, or great progress achieved.
Previous to WWII most attackers met their opposition in anything from a complete line up on a designated field of battle, to deliberate ambushes. The obvious difference being that  'Blitzkrieg' involved several different forces of arms. The intention being to completely overwhelm the opposition forces.

The modern equivalent might be the "Shock and Awe" of Allied forces in Iraq.

Declarations of war used to proceed battles by many months and the point of battle would be mutually decided beforehand.  'Blitzkrieg'  is most effective with no prior warning given for example Pearl Harbour, where the Japanese used their own brand of  a type of 'Blitzkrieg' only on  a smaller scale, if they could have followed that up with a large land force the result would have been even more devastating.

I have yet to see any serious reference quoting  'Blitzkrieg'  as anything different to any other reference.

The Bf was and still is an accurate reference applied to once existant aircraft. Me was used in a similar context. Either is as accurate as "Spaghetti Junction" or "Midlands Motorway Interchange", maybe even "Gravelly Hill Interchange", all are correct, and thus interchangeable, although to be pedantic only the official, original name should be correct.

Aww now you've gone and spoilt it with common sense

Strange, an excess of common sense not usually listed among my faults!

The 110 seems to be a very well-kitted aircraft considering its failure in its intended role and generally unglamorous service record. The newish Dragon 1/32 and Eduard 1/48 kits seem to suggest that the appetite has not gone away. I admit to being tempted by the Eduard kit myself, especially as the consensus seems to be it's rather less hardcore than their Fw190s. Anyone round here built one?

Hi PZ

I have just finished the Fujimi BF110c/d 1/48 scale.
http://airfixtributeforum.myfastf...itt_Bf_110D_5a28__about15537.html

Great kit for it's age (1977), no fit problems at all, you can get it cheap on ebay, though you'll probably need to get aftermarket decals, due to the age & aftermarket cockpit detail as the interior is very sparse, which makes it a not so cheap kit.

Anyway here's a review of the kit
http://www.swannysmodels.com/Bf110cd.html

the Eduard kits look pretty good, some reviews here:

cheers
Mark

Not sure about 'Blitzkreig' but there's a whole list of wartime terms which basically seem to be myth - take 'Whispering Death' which allegedly the Japanese called the Beaufighter, and the 'Flying Porcupine' which the Germans allegedly called the Sunderland. There is considerable doubt that these were anything other than the creation of Allied propagandists, but are often repeated as fact. I would add to the 'La Muerta Negra' which Argentinian soldiers/pilots are said to have called RN Sea Harriers in the Falklands. Any evidence for this anyone?

How long before the mods split this off into a separate thread then. Anyone taking bets?

I don't think those were the first words that came to mind with the Argentinian pilots ...   ROTFL

I have in the back of my mind a reference to the "Me Bf 109 / 110" which hedges bets!

I suspect that there's more to it than meets the eye, but this is drifting off-topic, and probably deserves its own thread.

If I may add my mustard to the sauce - IIRC in the RLM type listings there were no mfr. abbreviations at all, the aircraft being prefixed "8-" for security purposes. And I also think that at least from mid production onwards (109F) both "Bf" and "Me" could be found on Mfr.'s plates, I recall some mag article or reader's letter on this topic from the late 70s or 80s, probably in Modell Fan or Flugzeug. So I doubt we should be too dogmatic here...

Well, I've got an Eduard 110 on order so should be able to report back on the relative qualities of that machine at some stage. Particularly as I'll be building what comes through the door rather than what is in the stash until the pest controllers can sort out the hornets' nest in my roof...
