First step as the new guru...
So my question is, should we have a theme build or a single subject build for the next GB?
The last three builds have all been of a single subject:
Rapide Jan - March 2008
737-200 Apr - June 2008
Concorde May - Jul 2009 (the only civvy 2009 build!!!)
They have all been moderately successful, though. Should we carry that on? If so, what suggestions do you have? Rich already suggested the F-27. There was also the aborted Rotodyne build. Any other ideas?
Or, alternatively, what about a theme build? And again, suggestions are most welcome... Ideas already expressed are for:
a 1/72 theme build (so that would allow the F-27, the Skyvan, the Heron, the Trimotor, the Ju-52, DC-3 and the Connie to name a few - plus some conversions of military aircraft);
a 1/144 theme build (so the Sky Kings and other "modern" airliners);
and I'll throw in a new idea - a "widebody jet" build - so the 1/144 747, Tristar, DC-10 and A300B along with the much smaller 1/300 747-400 and 777).
Or we could just throw it open to any civil aircraft.
As I mentioned above, we've only had one civvy build this year. It would be nice to get a second one in.... once we've narrowed it down and got some suggestions, I'll poll for the most popular and then poll for a start date.
This poll will run for 7 days.

The original thinking with the civvie builds was that there were so few in the catalogue that single subject was the way to go. However, with not many civvie GBs taking place, I don't think that's such a concern any more.
I quite like the idea of a 1/72 build, as I have a Connie, and the widebodies as I fancy doing one of the 1/300 kits. Mind you, I'm not the best at finishing GBs, as you might have noticed... _________________ Cheers,

Oooh, hadn't thought of that.
Technically they are registered as civil aircraft, so in the interests of diversity, yes, why not!
By the way, I should point out that I'm not against the idea of airliners in a military finish (Ju52, Skyvan, Islander, DC-3/Dakota, VC-10 etc. all offered with military options), either - they were designed and built as airliners - livery is merely a colour scheme.

7 votes up so far - but no posts in here admitting who they're from! I know Paula voted for "any aircraft" (she's got our one vote - it's not fair for me to influence this one). We have Ratch's "any aircraft" as well.
So come on, then - own up! It'll give us an idea of who's actually up for the GB!

I voted for "Single Aircraft" for the one reason (selfish, perhaps) that when looking for "how-to's" and "Lessons learned" everything is in the one place. I might not join in the build, but when I get around to making whatever the subject is, it would be the first place I'd look. If I were to nominate a "single civil a/c" then I would say B747, as the Concorde (my favourite) has been done, and the Jumbo comes in 2nd. However, I could see that the Jumbo would limit many people, so my 2nd choice would be DC-9, closely followed by DH-88 Comet (racer) and DH Comet (jet). _________________ “The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.” Winston Churchill |

I voted for "any civil aircaft" as it gives the widest range of options and should hopefully get more participants in the GB.
I don't normally do civil aircraft but if the any aircraft option wins I'll look into finding something to have a go at. _________________ "It's life Jim, but not as we know it!" - Dr McCoy

I voted for any civil aircraft, (as long as its not another Concorde )
I would love to do a SRN1 hovercraft, but don't want to pay silly money for one. How much was that one at Farnborough Ratch, £20?

I went for theme, seeing as both of the ones that caught my fancy fitted into that category. _________________ Cheers,

Could one still get away with building a nominally civilian aircraft, but in military markings.....Like I did with my Dragon Rapide That Which Shall Not Be Named! build a while back?

I have an Airfix Ford Trimotor that I'm itching to build in semi-fictional military markings.....However, I do have one or two unfinished builds that I should really attend to first!
All the best

I went with any civil aircraft. I have a couple of choices, de Havilland DH.114 Heron and Ford Trimotor
If i did the Tri MotorI would either do it as the US Marines kit option or get aftermarket decals for the 1 used by the RAF during the war _________________ Airfix Club 500006 |

Boost.... last couple of days to get the vote in if you fancy a civil build.
So far we have 10 votes for "any civil aircraft", a couple for "theme", one for "single subject" and a couple who don't want to join in.
The good news is we have more than enough positives for the green light.

Make it 11 for 'Any'.
I quite fancy the Islander as I've never done one before, or perhaps the Cherokee Arrow -the last one I did was over 30 years ago! _________________ If you can't Dodge it, Ram it!!!!!!!! |

Right, that settles it, then. We will be having a build for any civil aircraft next.
I'll poll for a start date!
