I have just secured the early kit 4001 and at last will be able to build a 142 Sqdn kite.
Just like to ask the experts out there the particular pitfalls of the kit.
I'm basically going to build OOB but i recall years ago that the wheels/tyres were rubbish in shape.
Now that i am more au fait with building kit after many years in the wildeness i intend to give it my best shot and hopefully produce something reasonable. ....

Seems the only snag was the joining of the fuselage yeah?

Photo of the model i have which differs from the one shown in Ratch's build ...

The particular area of trouble is around the nose turret IIRC, LL.

The wheels are a bit anaemic and the main undercarriage can be a bit delicate too!

I don't remember anything major with this, but there were a few sink marks around the nose which were tricky to fill and sand with the raised detail.

Of course this kit won't be comming out again as the tool is worn.

The wheels being too skinny is easily fixed by shimming with plasticard until you get the desired thickness. I'm glad this kit has been retired. Mine was so warped and covered in flash as to be almost unbuildable. I almost ditched it several times but I'm glad I stuck it out as it looks quite nice when done. The boxart showing KW-E being chased by 109's is one of my all time favourites and was the reason I bought the kit in the first place.

Opened the box this morning ...
First impression is that there does not seem a lot of parts for such an aircraft .

Small amounts of flash on a lot of components.

but to be expected really

I had secretly wanted to open up the bomb-bay

but hadn't realised such a curve on the tops of the doors. I have never seem a Wimpey model with the doors open ... i wonder why ??

I have a few references picture for the additional doors but i am thinking i may need to cut straight edges to have them flush with the fuselage

Turrets seem rather bare and as these are quite obvious when viewed may go into a little extra details to make them 'functional'

It would be a fairly involved job.

Well iv'e taken the plunge and i am going for it.
Wellington bomber has had its bomb-bay cut out and now to start on the details.

I suspect that i shall only be doing the basic details as you wont see much but i will config the FIVE doors and depending on the space i shall try and get some bombs in there. (Depends on the Airfix bombs fitting really)

Five doors? How does that work LL.

There's three 'cells' in the Wimpey 'bay isn't there unless you're building a 'Cookie Carrier'?

I did consider the 'cookie' carrier but the best image/ loading diagram i can look at seems to be that the Cookie LOOKS like it external but of this i'm not 100%

FIVE doors: the outer cells had two doors and the middle cell one

Fascinating stuff. Thanks for clearing that up guys.

I also notice from Ratch's photos that the doors are segmented in order to get around the curvature problem!

Mr Wallis was on the ball!

Having not seen any photos of a 'Cookie Carrier' do you think larger doors may have been fitted?

Thanks for including those photos Ratch. I shall have to make up the ribbing for the bb doors. As i have plenty of bombs then it will be them rather than the 'cookie'
The official modification is '423' was incorporated into a number of versions, (i'm building the Mk.III) but the diagram posted of the loading has all but the cookie and torpeodo carrier with bomb doors whereas those two dont.
I shall have to search for a 'cookie carrier' photo just out of interest. I have seen one in colour i think but obviously the bay is in the shade of the fuselage but you never know what might turn up.

I have added a 10thou piece to beef up the wheels a wee bit and they do look a lot better i think.

I had the idea to split the bomb bay into three and have a piece of micro strio inside each cell on to which i will be able to glue the bombs and their pins. (Bombs from the Airfix Lancaster)
I dont think i could manage to drill accurate holes for all of them to fit precise into the bay

Slowly cracking on ...

I wonder if somewbody could possible scan me the aircraft camouflage pattern of the upper surfaces please??
The sheet i have is not the clearest for me and i would like to have as accurate as possible, the camo pattern.
