Despite not posting, I have been making steady progress.
The hull is now assembled, complete with deck, transparencies et al. I have continued to build and paint as many sub-assemblies as possible, and am getting to the point where I can start attaching these to the hull. Unfortunately, I have discovered that the barrel of the main gun was broken on the sprue - I have tried to repair it, so it's a little shorter than it was and somewhat bendy. I'll see what it looks like once it's on the platform and decide then whether I need to do anything more to it.
Tonight's job is to start painting the deck and hull, plus taking some photographs to prove that I'm getting somewhere.
Edit: Small whinge - is it me, or is the placement of parts on the sprues a little random? I've been having a devil of a job finding some parts, where one section needs pieces from two or three different sprues. They could at least have given the sprues letters and referred to those in the instructions! _________________ Cheers,

I agree that the placement of parts is a bit random. The nine eyes for the rigging are spread over three sprues for example. But Adrian, remember, this is a classic Airfix kit of the Seventies. I think you are too used to more modern species and have been spoilt!

Quite right - me! me! me! that's all it's ever about...
And was there a paper shortage in the 70's? I can't believe they fitted the instructions for a 280-odd part kit onto so few sheets.
Sorry - having a tough time with some SQL and XML at work at the moment, so I'm feeling a bit whiney! _________________ Cheers,

Enough of the random wittering, here's proof of some progress.
A couple of shots of the hull, with the cabin roof sections dry fitted and a very rough Hu27 undercoat.
And my slightly bendy gun.
I didn't get much done on Friday - other half was due to go out but was ill so didn't go. Got lots done last night, though, and I'm feeling slightly more confident that I might make the end date. _________________ Cheers,

Day off today, with nothing better to do than make models, so I've been making some good progress.
I'll take some more pics at the end of the day (or tomorrow), but this is what it looked like this morning, with the cabin, torpedo tubes, depth charges and gun deck all dry-fitted.
I seem to have hit a particularly rich vein of ejector pin marks on the various sheets and walls that go along the side, so I've been working at those, along with touching up the painting on the hull and undercoating those parts I haven't touched yet. Progress has been good, and the number of parts left to fit is diminishing, but there are still a lot of them and they're getting smaller! _________________ Cheers,

Bit more done today - started to stick the various bits and bobs onto the deck. Didn't get around to taking a picture before the light went, but here is what it looked like at about 2p.m.
Doesn't look that different to the last picture I posted, but now everything is glued down!
And here's a tip to those who haven't got very far yet: make sure that you put the torpedo tubes through the bulkhead and glue on the rear doors before you glue the bulkhead to the deck. I didn't, and it's a devil of a job to stick them on afterwards. _________________ Cheers,

Nearly there - fitted the side canvas doubries, mast, the little round rigging things (spigots?), a flag pole or two and the props. Only the handrail posts and rudders to go, then some rigging. Tried to take some pictures this morning, but the light wasn't good enough.
Don't think I'm going to make the deadline as I probably won't be able to do any more tonight, but I'm hoping to get it finished by Sunday.
Slight disaster when I picked it up to take photos this morning, too. Dark room - reached out to grab it - forgot I'd put the mast one. Slightly bent top section on the mast, but I think I've managed to straighten it out _________________ Cheers,

As usual, much less progress than I was expecting over the weekend. This may have had something to do with going to my company Christmas do on Saturday night, and feeling a little ...ill... on Sunday morning.
Anyway, everything that should be stuck is now stuck on, and I've started rigging. I have two types of thread - one black and one 'clear'. I started using the black, but it seems to be virtually immune to superglue - just couldn't get it to stay attached. The clear is much better and I made more progress with that in an hour than I had for the rest of the day with the other one, but of course it is going to need painting. _________________ Cheers,

Good luck with the rigging - you definitely need to be hangover-free for that! I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of the completed boat in the GB gallery.

Hangover? Who mentioned a hangover ? It was a piece of undercooked turkey, I tell you!
I forgot to say that I've lost a couple of pieces to the carpet monster.
One of the rigging posts (the very last one left to do, obviously ) went ping from the tweezers. Easy enough to make a replacement, but it's the one at the junction between the torpedo tube and the bulkhead and wouldn't be visible behind the liferaft, so I don't think I'm going to bother.
The other bit(s) that are gone are one of the running lights and the piece it attaches to. Bit suspicious that one, because I hadn't joined them together, yet they've both gone missing. A bit big to lose on the floor too, so I'm wondering if they are still lurking somewhere. _________________ Cheers,

I did. I wasn't accusing, I was just advising!

No, I reckon it was definitely the turkey. Although I can't quite remember what happened to the contents of the two bottles of white wine that were at my end of the table. The water I was drinking tasted very nice, though... _________________ Cheers,

Mostly finished now - rigging is on and paint touched up, just the decals to apply.
Pictures from this time last week:
And from this morning:
The rigging was quite stressful, but I enjoyed it in a slightly sado-masochistic sort of way. It's not perfect, but as it's the first time I've done it, I'm quite pleased with the results. I'll post some more pictures over the weekend after the decals are on and when I can take them in better light.
Bit of a problem with the flag - the one in the kit looked like it had been drawn by a five year old with thick felt pens. I tried to use it, but it got even worse when I glued it to some foil, so I've ditched it and will have to make another one. _________________ Cheers,

Very nice build, Adrian.
I scanned the flag before starting the kit. Once I get a fully functional printer going again, I'm going to tidy up the flag and print off a nice sharp version - with swastikas.

Any chance you could send me a copy of the scan? It would save me having to hunt around for a picture on the net. _________________ Cheers,

Sure can. Do you want the "unclean" version now or would you rather wait until I get round to making a "clean" version (could be a while though)!

If you give me the "unclean" version (conjures up pictures of lepers...), then I can do a bit of tidying for you - should save you a bit of effort. _________________ Cheers,

Finished at last! It was actually done last Friday, but I haven't had a chance to take pics since then.
I'm reasonably pleased with the end result, but doing the rigging under a bright daylight lamp illustrated why you really shouldn't paint under artificial light - a few spots I've missed! Anyway, this is the first bit of rigging I've ever done and I think it's come out alright. This is probably also the largest and most complex kit I've ever built - you don't tend to get too involved doing 1/72 scale aircraft!
Enough waffle - here are the pics.
