Excuse my ignorance but I thought that Stirling V's were the Glider Tug variants
Looking on Hannants today, am I wrong _________________ and was Jerusalem, builded here

'Fraid so, the IV was the tug, the V was a transport version.

There was an article in Airfix Mag yonks back, but it looks fairly simple - replacement glazing for the front turret (saw off a small portion of the fairing above the nose so that the rear part of the aperture is vertical all the way up), delete the mid-upper turret and fabricate some sprue to make the tow line attachments.

It is a possibility for the NP
On 5th May 1942 'A' Flight of the Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment arrived at Chelveston from Ringway, Manchester to trial Stirling & Halifax bombers in Glider towing roles. Hotspurs, Horsas and Hamilcars were also present _________________ and was Jerusalem, builded here

| Pand65au sent me a load of info on Stirling Glider tugs from the Airborne Forces manual a while back, can send the relevant bits if this would help. Incidentally the glider towing rig was the same as that used on the Wimpey and Whitley if this helps - basically a horseshoe-shaped frame around the rear fuselage that could pivot up and down. The lack of a good Stirling IV conversion is a major omission IMO, but we'll just have to do it old-school for now. |

Please PM me with your e-mail address and I'll send what information I have that is still accessible.
Most of this information was forwarded to me by pand65au.....So any goodies should really go in that direction.
I do have one original bit to add though.....Will I qualify for a small discount perhaps?
Seriously though, it is great to hear that Heritage are interested in making a Stirling IV.....Various threads here and elsewhere seem to suggest that it will be quite popular!
All the best

Reckon so!
It's good stuff mind you.....But more than a simple 'Trackhead' like me can adequately digest.
All the best

Ian T
When you produce your conversion don't fotget the parachute appature and the semi retractable static line guard.
I suppose there isn't any chance of some desent supply containers to hang in bomb bays and under Dakotas, Seafires, Wildcats, Typhoons etc. I have the references if you need. |
