I wonder if something similar could be done on smaller boards like this

Doable but difficult.....Would we be able to get everything lined up and consistent?  Think

I still think a base cloth and  modular terrain would work well.  It's easy to store and can be expanded collapsed according to the room available.  It means we can do a different display (Or even battle! ) each time and we can add more terrain over the course of time, making this an ongoing and evergrowing project.

It was on several boards butted together and, if memory serves, was about 8 foot square so perhaps a little too large for us. Nether the less I think that some elements of it could be used to form part(s) of our diorama(s).
