Hawk,
I'm afraid it as this is an Airfix tribute site it has to be Airfix kits only in a formal 'Group-Build' however an informal 'Theme Build' in the same vein as the Aircraft "Ugly Sisters Ball" Theme Build could be started in the 'Military Vehicles' section of the site.

I would prefer to keep the SAS idea to an Airfix only Group Build because it is on I actually can do while still contributing to my main 1/72 scale model collection!

All the best

Just to dust of this old thread, would we be able to use accessories such as SHQ parts and figures?

As the AA GB has finished I was wondering if now would be the time to start organising the next armour GB, possibly an idea that was suggested before, just Airfix Tanks.

Cheers,

Luke

Yes the time has come to put forward some more ideas for Military vehicle Group Builds, as Luke suggests an Airfix tank would seem to fit the bill.

Personally I would like the build to focus on one particular kit as in the Centurion Build although we could go for the themed build ie Axis tanks or Allied tanks.

My list of subjects would be as follows

Panzer IV group build

StuG III group build (I know it is not strictly a tank)

Sherman group build

Churchill group build

or a themed build along the lines of

WW2 Axis Tanks group build
Panther, Tiger, StuG III, Panzer IV, Chi Ha

WW2 Allied Tank group build
Sherman, Churchill, T34, Lee/Grant, Matilda, Crusader

Any thoughts or variations on the themes above If we can have a small debate here to perhaps narrow the odds I will then put up a poll featuring some of the favourites.

Cheers

Stu

I have two Shermans, a Stug and a Lee/Grant in my stash, so I'd be happy to build any of those, either as specific subjects or as one of the themes.  However, the Stug and Lee/Grant are ones that I haven't seen many of, so might be something a little out of the ordinary?

Not being a trackhead, I don't know much about any of them (kit or subject), so I'll let others debate the merits of each Sofa.

Apart from the wheels, IIRC the mould was changed at some point, the Aifix StuG is a good representation of the original, specially considering it's the same age as me. Hybridising with the old Matchbox Panzer III improves it and also takes it outside the rules of the GB.....

The Lee/Grant has turret issues in both variants and doesn't really look right when built, as well as lacking sandshields and stuff.

The Panzer IV is basically sound, Sgt Squarehead has blogged a conversion which tells you everything you need to know.

The Churchill is not for the faint-hearted (or impatient)

Only if the result ends up being more Matchbox than Airfix.  At the risk of dragging the thread off-topic, what bits of each do you end up with?

I'm sure I've got a Churchill lurking somewhere too, but it has no tracks as I knicked them to put on my Matchbox bridgelayer.

For the StuG the main thing is the Matchbox road wheels, the Airfix ones have a telegraph pole-sized axle sticking out of them. Obviously the axle will need pruning.

I've got some black vinyl tracks from the 80s/90s issue of the Chuchilll kicking about if you're interested.

Sounds like that would be okay for a GB - still more than 50% Airfix if you just change the wheels.

Thanks for the offer of the tracks - I'd better see if I can find the Churchill first!

I have a couple of PzKpfw IV's, a Churchill 'Crocodile', a couple of Crusaders, an M3 Lee/Grant, a Sherman 'Crab' and a Stug III
Would a multi-choice poll indicate which should appear on a short-list  Think

I might be interested in the Crusaders, I've got all the bits ready for another MkIII kit-bash.....I'd endeavour to use at least 50% Airfix parts on each kit-bash and would probably have enough spares for an Airfix MkII almost OOTB.

How about an 'Airfix/Whoever Kit-Bash GB'?

Given the limited choices with the present range perhaps we could stretch the rules a bit until the ex-JB Vickers or Matilda Hedgehog are available.....Giving me a few more buildable options?

Just a thought, all the best
If we go for the Kit-Bash GB, I'll stick my neck out and volunteer to lead it.

Thanks for the input so far chaps, based on the comments above I think that I will put up a poll to decide the type of build ie themed, individual kit or kit bash/conversion and then take it from there.

Cheers

If I had to suggest a subject, I'd go for an Ex-JB Group Build. That is, any kit (in an Airfix boxing) that was previously available in a JB box.

No sneaking in JB boxings!!

Please make it a GB you can do with kits you most likely have already or are at least very easy to come by!

WWII, modern, cold war, and stuff like that is great with me.

But please don’t let it be a: “Former French 1/72 model marked as a 1/76 in a series 2 box with decal options for a vehicle used between 1955 and 1960 in south-west Africa”.

If you can see the difference

All the best from Jesper.

I'd been thinking of this for the last couple of days, too - but then I had another idea as well.

What about a "Land Rover" GB, in the same vain as the earlier Jeep build. This would allow the ex-JB Landies to be built, the ex-JB 1 tonne Landies and, sneaking in under the fence, the original Airfix Bloodhound...

I am not, usually, a mil vehicles person but this is one  I'd happily join in with (with my newly purchased ex-JB 1 tonne Landie ambulance).

Cheers,
Dan

I like the sound of an ex-JB build, or a lovely Landie build for that matter. Perhaps the Shaun the Sheep L.R. could be included in the build?

I'd quite like a pop at the ex-JB Land Rover too...

I'd be interested in the Ex-JB idea, once the Vickers MkVI is out in an Airfix box, but I am not interested in a Landrovers GB.

For what it's worth & all the best

A Landrover exclusive build? Sorry, I’m off.

I’m more into a build like “Western Europe 50-80”.

All the best from Jesper.
