I think you need to be looking at the bigger picture - a quick tour of model ship websites shows that 1/350 and other large scales are very popular. I think the tendency for people to look to larger scales is a trend that goes across the board of modelling genres. This doesn't mean that smaller scales should be ignored and if you're going to put together a CAD model for the purpose of manufacturing plastic kits then issuing the same subject in a variety of scales should be a doddle, relatively speaking.

If 1/350 is too big, then not many folk will be buying Airfix's 1/24 Mosquito then.........

Should someone tell them before they fully commit?

Let me rephrase. 1/350 is too big for me. I won't be buying the 1/24 Mosquito for the same reason. I can certainly understand that there is much greater profit to be made in the larger scales, but I hope that Airfix scale down their 1/350 HMS Illustrious down to 1/600.

So do I! I think the problem for 1/600 fans is that it is possibly viewed as dead-in-the-water (groan!) in respect of commercial viability. Trumpeter are not in the least hesitant to issue the same subject in two scales and in different configurations.

On reflection I could be persuaded  to add another to my wishlist. The idea came from stevefrog's letter further up. He asks for a 1/72 Leander Class Frigate. A bit on the big side for me but what about the smaller predeccessor? I think they were Blackwood Class and I know 2 of them [one was "Torquay"] took part in the Falklands Conflict. Personally, I like their lines much more than the later versions.

Cheers

mariner , think your wrong re blackwood class they where long gone before the falklands
i agree they had lots of character and being smaller than the leanders would make a magic bigger scale model . as for torquay ( can't remember the class number ) but it was the plymouth (and she had a good scrap ) .
anyway by the process of  evolution that is where leanders came from .
anyway my crazy idea for a bigger scale would be nelson or rodney can't recall them  being mentioned very often .  stand by !!!!!!****.
cheers john

Once again I have to swallow my pride and apologise for my ignorance

I was wrong about the class of frigate I would like to see in 1/72. Looking at an early "Royal and Merchant Navy Diary" I find that they were the "Rothsay"/"Whitby" class Type 12 a/s frigates.
Beautiful wee ships.

While I am "on air" I can say that I have tracked down and ordered a 1/400th. scale kit of the "Admiral Graf Spee". Has to come from China so should be a long time acoming. They also do a kit of the "Admiral Scheer"

Bye the noo

a big beast ! ,your first choice of the ' blackwood ' class would , be very nice , put my name down for one !!!! . what is calling out for  for your 1/72  is a ' ton ' class sweeper !!!!! .
anyway don't know what you would want from a model ? but if it's big have look at the  ' the model dockyard ' ,web site . you see i have not got a clue  how to give you a ' link ' anyway mariner , happy modelling

How about a Colossus/Majestic class? Lots of options there.

Also, an Astute, Daring and CVF. (in 1:600)

it would be nice to get some more in 1/72 class

If they were to make one of the larger ships in 1/72 commercially something like the River class frigate might be a good bet because of the conversion possibilities although the larger size might prevent people buying too many

River Class- Tacoma Class- Colony Class not so accurate but also Loch and Bay Class or even the Christina O

or similarly Captain Class, Evarts Class, Buckley Class, Cannon Class, Edsall Class

Talking of larger scale warship stuff.

Has any manufacturer ever done bits of a warship before in bigger scales eg  1/72nd  pinnace, steam launch on davits, 4.5 inch twin turret.... A cutaway of a 15 inch turret would be something different to build.

I would consider models in larger scales at the moment I see a lot of Revell subs about, but why not an Armed trawler or a Fairmile gunboat. Or a Steam Gun Boat (175 tons, 145 ft long)

I recently stumbled across Britannia Minatures which although aimed at the Wargames market to a 20mm Insect Class Gunboat and a German armed Trawler amongst others . Has anyone got any experience of them?

I also found this which while out of date seems to offer quite a few 1:72 ish options.

Hey all

I'd really like to see some more modern classes like the Daring or Astute in 1/600.  I know thay aren't all that much to look at but they are an important part of Britain's current defence.  Modern equipment such as the Eurofighter or Challenger II have been kitted for their respective forces.

How about 1:600 paired kits:
Re-relaease the previous Daring destroyer, and include a Type 45

Vanguard battleship and submarine

Iron Duke and Type 23

Albion/Bulwark carrier and landing ship

Put old and new together. Some of the older kits are already out there (Ark Royal III, Daring) and put them with newly tooled kits.
