Haven't managed to find plans of Ark IV......still looking....

When Dave Cov and I were looking at doing a scratch build of Ark IV on the old forum, I did manage to find some plans at the National Maritime Museum.  But they were in about 1/92 scale and over £15 a sheet.  Realistically I reckoned the minumim that I would need would be about 6 sheets!  And then I would have to scale rthem down.

You have PM.  Many thanks.

Yep,

Been there too.  The plans would be fine if you were building a large scale model but they are way too expensive for a 1:600 scale model!

If the offer is still open a Type 42 in 1:600 would complement my Atlantic Conveyor (if I can convince myself my scratch-building deserves another spin).
PM sent.

Great.
Don't forget to post pics of your build.

Patrick

PS.  White Ensign have a superb 1:600 photo etch for this type of vessel.  Check it out on their site.

I'd be chuffed three shades of pink just to see Airfix re-issue three of their best 1:600 kits--Prinz Eugen, Repulse, and Scharnhorst.

Okay, so Scharnhorst wasn't exactly in the same league as the first two, but despite the complaints that they modelled the ship as launched (without her later "clipper" or "Atlantic" bows, and the relocated mainmast), the kit is still reasonably accurate and not the worst for quality.

Of these kits, Prinz Eugen is perhaps the least-flawed, right out of the box; Repulse suffers from the usual "two eras" syndrome common to nearly every other commercially-produced kit of the battlecruiser, but this can be overcome in a number of ways. Scharnhorst makes for a relatively easy conversion into Gneisenau, with the scratchbuilding of a clipper or Atlantic bow {POP QUIZ: Do you know the difference between the two bow configurations?}.

In my opinion, to have these back again, even with somewhat worn-out moulds, would be great!

Sailorman wrote:
Stop wishing and start scratchbuilding. ........ it really isn't all that difficult! You can build ANYTHING you want to!

Apart from varying degrees of difficulty, the beauty of Airfix' limited range is their eminent qualification as conversion and scratchbashing projects. A few base kits can produce an amazing variety of models. It is assumed everyone here knows about many of these, from the historic Airfix Magazine articles of the 1960s thru 1980s.  However, even these don't cover the more in-depth possibilities available to the modeler, that can be done with further scratchbuilding and/or kitbashing.

I don't want this post to run into article-length depth, but suffice it to say that the much-reviled HMS Ajax kit, for all its problems, DOES possess a reasonably accurate hull form. Even better, that hull is fundamentally accurate enough to produce, with varying degrees of modification, the following light cruisers:

* Leander, Achilles, Neptune, or Orion;
* Amphion, Apollo, or the RAN Perth, Sydney, or Hobart;
* Arethusa, Aurora, Penelope, or Galatea;
* Argonaut, Bonaventure, Charybdis, Cleopatra, Dido, Euryalus, Hermione, Naiad, Phoebe, Scylla, or Sirius;
* Bellona, Black Prince, Diadem, Royalist, or Spartan.

For the above classes, some modifications are required to the hull length (shortening), as well as some reconstruction of the stern. This can be a bit daunting for the casual kit-basher, but as Sailorman wrote, it really isn't all that difficult.

Or, if light cruisers aren't your style, how about converting a Suffolk kit into another County-class? I have already begun such a conversion, with the aim of creating a model of HMS London (as reconstructed).  To avoid addressing the torpedo bulge issue when choosing some County-class ships, one may wish to consider "waterlining" as an option.

Finally, the Repulse kit not only makes an excellent base for building an HMS Renown model but, when "waterlined" and modified, even serves as a starting point for HMS Courageous or Glorious!

I've been looking for ages to find plans for the ark IV. Tried the NMM website without success, has anyone out there got plans in any scale or know where I could get them.

Perhaps that is partly because Ark Royal IV was still in service when most of the authoritative commercial plans of major RN warships were being drawn; official plans would not have been available.

Ayup All..

I should like to see a series of ships from the Ancient world...

New Trireme, Spanish Treasure Galleon, English Privateer, (generic) Phoenician Trader, Viking Longship (an accurate one) Incan 'Reed Boat' a la Thor Heyerdahl... Kon Tiki...

From the modern, a decent Liberty ship, Eighteen Hundreds Steam packet, Clipper (other than the Cutty Sark)...

Stuff like that....

But based on official plans? For example Jecobin sell plans for many current RN warships, even the yet to commission HMS Daring and HMS Astute, but I doubt they are based on official plans since those are presumably still classified.

Not sure about that .... but realistically speaking ... what possible secrets can be divulged in 3-view waterline drawings?

Feanor - I saw the new Emhar 1/72 scale Viking longship in Modelzone today. I can't vouch for its accuracy though. For another clipper, there's always the Revell Thermopylae (1/96 scale - it's big!)
