I might be building the Seasprite, so I'm torn - it could be good because I could let you get ahead of me and then just copy you, or it could be bad because when we've both finished I'm likely to be embarrassed by the comparison...

The HH-53 is such a big brute of a chopper isn't it? Be nice to see that one done up.

We were driving up the M11 once and pair of MH-53s flew over us. What a machine!

The more I think about it the harder it gets. So, I think I'll get my big chopper out of the box it's currantly in and give it a bash!

I fetched the Sikorsky out of the loft and took pictures of the sprues.

The molding looks okay to me, nice and crisp with no obvious sink marks or flash.

We'll see how it goes together in a couple of weeks.

I will be building the Jolly Green Giant as well - I think I will start after you so I can learn from any mistakes (as if). Perhaps we could do different schemes. I was aiming to be fairly dull with the out of box Vietnam one. I will certainly be building with rotors folded back to save space. The Sea Stallion navy schemes look a bit smarter, but I'm not sure how much conversion work is needed.

This is quite good site for the German ones, but they look pretty dull.

I'm doing this OOB as the USAF one on the box top. It's a HH-53C of the 67th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, USAF, Woodbridge, England. (late 1970's- early 80's?)

The (old) instructions say to use the following paints for the camoflage;

M3 Olive Green (H30)
M5 Light Brown (H83)
M17 Dark Green (H75)
M6 Black (H33)
M13 Light Aircraft Grey (H64)

Should I go with these Humbrol numbers? Or are there better colours to use from the Humbrol range?

Personally I've never really been happy with the Humbrol call out for the tan colour in Vietnam 3 tone camo - I find it too dark and usually revert to Revell. I don't have the number off hand but I will look it up tonight.

Vietnam Tan is FS30219. Urban Fredriksson's charts give either H118 (US Tan) or H119 (Israeli Light Earth) as a match for this. Personally I prefer H118.

I've gotten around to starting it. As Gerry has experienced with his one, there are alot of tiny pieces so I've been extra careful cutting them off the sprue.

I've started with the cockpit which is comming on ok. I've also started doing the sub assemblies such as drop tanks and engine intakes.

See how you get on around the engine intake areas. I found them problematic. I am currently trying to make somethng that at a distance, will pass for some internal seating since I reckon with the rear door down, the risk of a tail sit will be overcome. Besides, it just looks to me t be a machine whose very essence is bits that stick out all over the place, so it will best to accentuate the impression. I am fearful that the greens and brown will make it a rather soulness footnote on a shelf, but I also don't fancy the even duller dark German green. The overall grey would be eyecatching, but it's place in history is surely in Vietnam.

gerry, from memory of when I last built an HH-53 - a loong time ago! - there isn't an issue with tailsitting due the really aft position of the MLG.

The MH-53 (not an Airfix kit) I built some time ago certainly didn't need any extra weight in it, same as the Sea King, none needed there either.

There were eight in Desert Claw. I don't know how many were in Vietnam but I think I will rest my case on numbers. Either way thank you for the reminder. I could do a JGG in a bottle with sand instead of 'snow' - shake it to replicate the sandstorm that engulfed it.

And thanks for the comments about tail sitting. That's one thing less to worry about. Goodness knows, ther are enough ther things. But it is still being built with everything either tucked, open or swung or folded.
