That's interesting, does the rotor still rotate the same way for both aircraft?

Interestingly on the model, yes, the rotors are built the same - however I don't think this can be true on the real machine... ye cannae change the laws of physics, as someone once said, trying to pass through Warp 10.

Thanks Dan, after posing my question here I was really curious to know, so I went on Airliners.net and found quite a few photos of both versions, and, the rotors all turn in the same direction.  So the kits are right!  I find that very interesting indeed.

The tail rotors would only have to turn in the opposite direction if the main rotor itself did - they are both generating the same force, just on opposite sides of the tail.

Edit: The above assumes that the pitch of the tail rotor blades is the same in both of course.

Mmm, let me think about that one for a minute. Rotors turn one way and tail rotor turns in a given direction, countering the rotating force by, let's say, pushing, effectively. Now the rotor turns the other way, in theory, reverse the tail rotor blades and maintain the angle of incidence as before to exert the same force in the opposite direction. With an "open" rotor such as the fenestron, then yes, that'd work. On the Hind, though, there's a flipping great fin impeding the airflow, so pushing works but the opposite sucking doesn't as the mass flow rate is changed. So it isn't as starightforward as you may think. Boy I hate helicopter aerodynamics. It is certainly weird how they have changed sides of the tail rotor. There must be some good reason for it but I can't think what it'd be.

Enough of all that stuff.

Here's the last state of play of the Hind-D, which was last night. As I mentioned, stub wings are on as are the horizontal tail sections and a bit of sanding's been done but the refill is there around the cockpit section where it cracked. All 3 engines are there as is the small roof section. the Hind-A is in exactly the same state.

Once again next weekend will be dedicate to modelling, so more progress should come quickly.

Seems to be coming along nicely - the photos from Weston are just for reference, if not interest.

Thanks gerry - ugly, insect like thing, isn't it? Looks purposeful, though.

In addition to these two, I have the Italeri Hind to build and I have just won a Kitech Hind-F from e-bay... a real fleet of Hinds.

Update time - lots of work done.

First thing was to get both of the Hinds on their landing gear - easy enough to do and quick with a bit of superglue. When retracted, the -D nose gear would protrude outside the aircraft (in reality) whilst the -A has some gear doors to improve the aerodynamics. I also added the weapons pylons to the end of the stub wings. -D first

Then -A

Then the glass was masked up and added into place - both quite a nice fit. At the same time I added all of the aerials and other accessories:

And a couple of shots to compare:

Whilst all of this was going on, I was progressively spraying the anti-tank missiles white (no pics of that) and then close of play last night I primed them both with one coat of H64:

Slow progress but progress nontheless.

Both of my Hinds are the same base colour, so I'm working on that at the moment. They're both a yellowy sand shade, so I'm actually using Revell's 89 for the base. They both have a different camo colour laid over the top though - one brown and one green.

They've now both had 2 coats of Revell 89 to the fuselage though not to the stub wings, so are both still at the same stage. Here they are shunted off to one side of the modelling table for a bit whilst they dry:

I really must think about doing something on  he weapons again soon!

No pics to post as it's not worth it. However, the AT-2C "swatter" missiles are now fully white with a black nose and black rocket motor (even though I've found pics showing them to be either white and black or dark green, I've gone for the difficult one...), painted the stub wings the base sand colour and painted landing gear bays black. Next step is to lay out the camo for both Hinds.

IIRC Soviet ATGMs came in three schemes, depending on role

Live rounds were olive green

Training rounds were yellow

Parade (dummy) rounds were silver

They're more of an aluminium colour than a shiny polished silver.

Right, I'll try again and hope this stupid computer doesn't trip out on me again. What I already wrote once but lost was soemthing like the following.

Progress ont he Hinds is slow but I managed to get an hour of modelling in last night and another hour in tonight. The result is that I've managed to get some of the camo done on both of the Hinds. The pics below were taken before I did tonight's effort but essentially laid out the H30 green on the Hind-D and H-29 brown on the Hind-A. The first coat of H30 turned out to be mostly good enough and I managed to just touch up a few bits but the brown was a little thinner and had to have a second complete coat tonight.

The next step is to start work on the undersides, where both have the same colouring. The trouble is that I only just put the shroud around the rotary cannon on the -D, and just filled it, so it needs to be sanded down and primed before I can add the underside colour. That means that the one that should have been my lead build will now become my trailing build!

They're both well tasty!

Love the 'A' a little more , though.

Luckily we don't have a 19-month old running round the house (yet!)

Big style progress this weekend, once again. I spent a lot of time faffing to get the paintwork all touched up, painted the undersides of both helicopters the delicious sky blue, painted the rocket pods silver, touched a bit more up, took the masking tape from the cockpits, touched up once again, added a few detailing bits to the hind, a bit more blue and then added 2 coats of Klear to each.

Here they both sit alongside my Sukhoi all three drying off after the second Klear coat was added:

Last thing yesterday all three of their models had the decals applied but no pics due to lighting conditions.
