Thanks once again chaps

Have been trying to get the B17 and Anson builds out of the way so that I can concentrate on this one, have done a little bit more though.

Some more detail has been added to the rear bulhead, the grab rail that runs the width of the bulkhead has been added has have the vents on either side and the last rung for the ladder.

I have also started to make the details for inside of the pilot house, the control dials were drilled out of a small piece of plastic card and added to a plinth made of plastic card as was the wheel and throttle controls each side of the plinth.

Next I need to scratch build the small fold down seat that is fitted to the port wall on the inside of the pilot house, these details will then need to be painted before the pilot house itself can be attached to the deck.

More later

Cheers

Have not had much modelling time over the past couple of weeks but I got a little bit more done last night, chiefly the pilot house interior details as mentioned previously.

I made the small fold down seat from platic card and readjusted the position of the wheel as I had set this a little too close to the control consul.

Four cargo tie down points were added in the 'hold', these will be supplemented by further cargo tie down loops on the upper area of the 'hold' sides.

See entry below for more pictures

Cheers

Stu

More done yesterday, managed to make the stands for the MGs, not as difficult as I had imagined, simply measured out two triangles for each one and then cut a slot half way through them so that they would fit together, drilled out the holes and they came out quite well.

Here are the various Pilot house fittings, you can just make out the fold down seat against the inner wall inside. Also shown are the MG stands and the hatch for the main deck area

I have pinched some .50cals from some GMC kits and am now in the process of mounting them on the bases.

I also added lots of cable retaining loops from thin wire, these run along each side of the 'walkway' and keep the ramp cable in place.

The two 'U' shaped loops are for the secondary cable that runs to the winch

The ribs that run up each side of the craft were also accentuated with thin strip and an horizontal rib, missing on the Airfix kit, was also added along each side.

A bit out of sequence this, you can see the new ribs trimmed and sanded in the picture above this one

The small hatch on the rear deck was added from plastic card.

Past the deadline on this one now, it is surprising how long adding all of these little details takes Work will continue today, the wife is out all day so should get quite a bit done

Cheers

Stu

Another small update, still not much modelling time sadly

Here are the gun units completed. I pinched the spare plastic gun shields from the Dragon LCM3 kit (they also supply them in etched brass). These were trimmed down a fraction and a supporting bar was made from plastic strip.

The next picture shows the sub elements gingerly poised on the deck. I will attach them after some initial painting has been done.

Finally some of the work carried out on the cable pulley and pulley guard. A new pulley guard was made from plastic strip, the block was made from a piece of plastic chanel with another piece of plastic set inside of it, this allowed me to trap the rear cable inside. A small hole was the drilled through to take the forward cable.

I had hoped to make this all work and the ramp raise and lower but the cord that I have used is not really up to the job and has snapped on a couple of trial runs so on this one I will probably fix the ramp in the closed position. A lesson has beeen learnt for the next LCM that I build.

More later

Cheers

Great work updating this old kit Stu!

One minor point.....Might it not be better to swap the .50s out with a pair from 1/76 kits?  They do look a tiny bit too big in my opinion.

I hope this will not be taken as too harsh a criticism, or looming AMS on my part.....You have made such a beautiful job on this kit that I felt I should at least mention it.

For what it's worth & all the best

No problem Sarge, all points taken on board and any constructive criticism is always welcome .

My excuse is that I couldn't find any decent 1/76th scale .50s among my spares so opted for the Airfix/Heller GMC guns as they were nicely detailed and I felt that they did not look too bad comparing them to actual photos, in honesty I was more worried about the gun shields, they needed a bit of trimming down, but again looking at photos some of the actual things were quite large and obviously not made to any fixed pattern.

I feel that the guns will look more in scale when they and the boat/craft  have a coat of paint on them, that's my other excuse   .

An update on this build will follow shortly, I have just uploaded a few more pictures to photobucket.

Cheers

The raised 'ribs' on each side of the access ports that run along each cargo area wall were made from plastic rod sanded to shape and trimmed to size (these are possibly a bit too fat, much like me ). A further access hatch was added near to the ramp on each side wall. these details can be seen in the picture below.

The following picture shows the finished cable/pulley guard. I also made up some cleats or block type things carved from plastic rod, one on each side at the very front of each walkway.

A couple of boat hooks were made from plastic rod, these may still need a little attention, the hooks need trimming a bit. Small hooks were fitted to the side of the craft to take these.

The life belts had a little extra detail added in the shape of some cord, one piece was wrapped around the belt and then bound on at four points.

Here the pilot house has been temporarily placed on the deck once again and the life belts hung on small hooks fabricated from plastic strip. You can also see the completed cable reel housing this was made from thin plastic card.

And finally for tonight, a quick look at some figures that I will be using on this. They are made by Hecker and Goros and intended for use with the Airfix/Heller LCVP. I purchased my example from Historex Agents.

Next I hope to get some painting under way and some final assembly of the sub sections.

Cheers

Great stuff Stu, I love those lifebelts!

This really is a seriously good build and well worthy of those splendid new figures!  With so many other eye catching details I doubt very much that any size issue with MGs will be noticeable.....Brilliant stuff and a pleasure to see in progress!

All the best

Noticed a small error on my part last night. The blocks to support the rear funnel vents had been put on in the wrong position they should be at the rear corners of the deck alongside the pilot house, I thought it was getting a bit crowded around the gun positions   . I have therefore trimmed these off and added new ones in the correct location.

Cheers

Some time since the last update, I have been very busy at work so have had little or no modelling time

Anyway, here is the progress so far

The craft has had a couple of coats of grey, this was a Revell aqua colour, will have to check the actual shade again, may simply have been Grau/Grey. Sadly my LMS still does not stock Airfix acrylics . The Revell colour went on quite smoothly (applied by brush) and left a nice matt finish.

The sharp eyed among you will notice that I have missed off a few very important parts namely the panels on each side that form the lifting rings, these enable the craft to be hoisted from the LCTs into the sea. To  correct this error I have made up four of these pieces using plastic card and tube. You can see from the picture below the work in progress, I have gone a little bit wobbly on some of the hole drilling The plastic tube sections are still to be sanded down a little and the pieces then trimmed and shaped.

Some detail painting has also been carried out on the controls and wheel. I may yet attempt to add a little  dot of clearfix into each of the dial recesses.

The guns and mounts have also had a few coats of paint although a little more work may be required on these. You will note that this picture has hi-lighted a rather nasty ejector pin mark on the side of the ammo boxes.

Just out of interest I thought that I would add a comparison picture of some available crew figures. Both are listed as 1/72 scale, the chap on the left is from the Dragon LCMIII and his diminutive companion is from the Hecker and Goros set that I plan to use on this build. The Dragon figure is over 30mm tall, the H & G figure is just about 25mm tall, these measurements are taken from the sole of the boots to the top of their tin hats. It makes me wonder what actual scale the Dragon LCMIII is as this chap is clearly a bit of a giant.

Finally a quick glimps at the decals that I plan to use, I will be pinching a few figures, Letters and a flag from the Dragon sheet as this has plenty of spares. I have put a link to my sheet here as I am not sure of copyright issues on this.

Work continues, I will shortly be adding the missing parts and carrying on with the painting.

Cheers

He scales out at 7'. Even allowing for his tin hat and boots he would be a pretty big bloke!

Enjoyable build to follow BTW.

Not much of an update but here are a couple of pictures of the 'lifting rings' in place, also featuring a test fit of the helmsman.
