Correct. The doors open to cycle the undercarriage, then close once it is extended. It is to give some measure of protection to the gear bay when VTOL'ing, otherwise there would be the danger of FOD. With the engine shut down the doors can be shown open.

One other point for those wishing to add detail, is the auxiliary inlet (suction relief) doors. These are hinged and 'hanging loose' as it were. In forward flight they are firmly shut (lower air pressure on the outside), in the hover or on they ground with engine running they are open (higher pressure on the outside) and on the ground engine off they will be in various states of open or shut according to the law of gravity. Generally the top two will be open, the middle two at a half-way house and the bottom two closed.

Erm...
I'm progressing reasonably well, but sadly I shall be dragged away to foreign climes again at the weekend... _________________ Cheers,

Am I right in thinking that the Harrier GR.3's have white undercarriage compontnets/bays? My kit's instructions don't state, but this is my presumption judging from the other GR.7's _________________ Owen

Ratch informed me, and I will pass on to you,
"According to Model Alliance Decals, Hu: 166 Satin Light Aircraft Grey = wheel bay interiors (but get very dirty), interiors of air brakes/speed brakes, undercarriage"'

It's been pointed out to me that the Harrier T.10's canopies actually open sideways (hinge on the right) rather than upwards.
e.g. Harrier T.10 open canopy
Just thought I'd share this with anyone else who might be tempted to model it vertical like mine . Mind you, I wouldn't have had a problem if the pilot wasn't so bloomin tall!
Just off to remove some Clearfix .
