I'm probably going to hang laser guided bombs on it.  But not the correct laser guided bombs-- just some I have laying around that look like they should go on something with a laser in its nose.  I like being able to tell a story about a model.  "See those bombs?  They have little fins in front.  They're smart bombs.  See the nose of the plane?  That's a laser.  It guides the bombs."

See?  A story!  If the audience says "Those are PROPER RAF bombs, they're AMERICAN" I'll just smile and say "Step aside, sonny, don't bother me..."

This has been a DREADFUL winter.  It's snowing right now. So... I'd really like it warm up a little before I get started.  Our basement is still pretty chilly. The heli-chopper was assembled in the cold but I'm not looking forward to a repeat of that experience.

So, we're on hold for warmer weather.

Ladies and Gentlemen...

THERE IS HEAT IN THE CELLAR!

Not much to report.  I start building with the final appearance of the model in mind. So I usually begin by testing paints and comparing the colors and coverage.  You need some "parts" from other kits laying around to use.

I've been tempted to try painting the white/gray version, but I don't really like the way this looks after four coats.  So I might just stick with the gray/green.

This will all be painted black in honor of the sinking of the Lusitania.

I'm painting the "fan" silver so it will stand out.

There is much filing and trimming away of tabs, locating pins and a number of nasty ejector pin marks.

Stay tuned...

A little more work today.

The canopy is a direct violation of several international treaties and a crime against humanity.  I thought dipping it in Future would solve all my problems, but no.  So I decided to cut it in half and attach it in the open position.

The cockpit contained nothing so I made a very basic instrument panel and   decided, for the first time in decades (in honor of the Airfix Tribute Forum) to paint and install the pilot.

The use of Quasimodo as a pilot should distract anyone's attention from the deplorable molding of the the clear parts.

The pilot will be leaning out of the cockpit, wearing the universal expression of all pilots just before taxi-- "where in the devil is the crew chief??"

It's snowing outside but the basement is still warm...so more phun with photos!

The "dodgy" bit here was making sure that the open canopy would fit between the intakes.  Not as simple as it sounds!  I just happened to obsessively test fit the canopy and lo and behold.. I had to pry apart the two outer intakes to get the rear part of the canopy to fit in there.

Having no luck with the photos today so I'll just leave it there for now.

A little work on the photography setup and we have better results.

I tend to remove ALL locating pins, working parts or tabs.  It took a bit to determine how to approach the nozzles, until I realized that I could just saw off all the annoying bits and glue them on after the paint job is complete.

The paint jobs on RAF planes are always a bit of challenge to me.  Should I use the historically spot-on colors, or "cheat" a bit and use a darker green to increase the contrast so that the overall effect is--how you say?--cooler?

Here's a "test" of the proper dark sea grey and a too-dark green.  I think I like it.

The cockpit/pilot/canopy portion of the affair is coming along well.  I'm making one last effort to save the canopy from a lifetime in a reformatory.  One more coat of Future, then I'll paint the aft portion and glue it in place with white glue. Ah--the freedom of brush painting!

As usual, I rushed ahead and glued the canopy in place.  The best explanation for this that I have been able to cook up is that any time I pick up a part, there is 10% chance I'll drop it.  Then, 10% of the times that I drop something, it never appears again.  Vanishes into the fifth dimension.  So, in order to avoid losing the canopy altogether, I glued it in.

I realize this means that I'll have to paint around it, but that's how it goes.

The position of the pilot was achieved by accident.  When I shoved him in the seat, he wouldn't sit straight because of the added instrument panel.  But I liked how it looked, so I did some minor surgery on the arm to bend it "in" to get it out of the way.

Starting the camouflage scheme with an application of dark sea grey.

This was just brushed on straight from the bottle using a Floquil size "0" brush.

Incredibly, it's almost impossible to find "Dark Sea Grey" in the U.S.  because Testors makes "Extra Dark Sea Grey" and "Medium Sea Grey" but not "Dark Sea Grey."  So this is a version of it that I mixed up myself.

NOTE:  All of my comments about Testors/PolyScale paints refer to acryl/acrylic colors ONLY.  I don't use any kind of paint except for a very occasional use of Testors silver enamel.

First coat of Extra Dark Green

Every thing is very tentative at this stage.  I "duplicate" some effort because I don't want to paint over one color with another.  Too much danger of a bad reaction of some kind.  The first coats give me the basic pattern and provide a foundation for coats two and maybe three.  Also shows flaws that need fixing and flaws that can be comfortably ignored (my favorite kind).
