Should be a pretty straightforward build, the only thing I'll make a big effort on is the intakes, the rest will be OOB. I'll be doing it as a great white tin triangle, so the paint scheme should be easy enough to do!

Looks impressive, but in reality it's pretty chunky engineering, lots of big bits. Goes together pretty quickly.

Started on the cockpit and pilots as this will be the rate limiting step in getting the fuselage joined up.

Four pieces and the wings are together!

The intakes, which will need some work, the fin, tail cone, and the instant sunshine bomb.

Glued the Blue Steel bombay in place with some additional plastic card supports. Painted the nose black and the exhausts gun metal.  Having test fitted the top half on, I think the exhausts are going to need some sort of blank, as you can see right into the cavernous interior othjerwise.

Flight crew are ready. I prepped the console by painting it black, then discovered when putting the instrument panel decal on - the dials are actually clear rather than printed white. Repainted the panel white and reapplied decal!

Made milliput inserts in the exhausts by applying clingfilm to the top surface, bunging the milliput in the lower part and squeezing shut. I then used a pencil inserted into the exhaust to flatten the exposed face. I then popped them open and removed the cling film to allow it to dry before painting.

With the remaining miliiput I epoxied a 40g fishing weight into the nose, hopefully should be sufficient.

The fuselage halves have been joined together, various elastic bands, clamps and the world's supply of clothes pegs just about got it to touch everywhere!

Crew are sealed in their little pit, I doubt much will be apparent once the canopy is in place.

The intakes are going to need a major amount of work, which to be fair I was expecting. I'll use milliput which should allow for wet sculpting.

The tail fin and tail cone went on, the fin was OK but the tail cone needed some plastic card in places and will need filling and sanding to eliminate the join as the seam is pretty iffy.

No pictures as my camera's usb port is broken. Progress has slowed to the pace it takes to remove milliput from the intakes. I was somewhat over generous, and it's proving to be an arduous removal process. The milliput clogs the files very easily. I'm thinking of going down to my local DIY to see if I can find something a bit coarser which will fit and do the job. At least once they're done the apint job should be pretty uncomplicated - white, white and more white!

A few pictures to show my stalled build .

Filler around the tail fin.

Milliput on the left intake, this has had most of the stuff removed and just needs some tweeking for it to be acceptable.

The right intake, see the step, that's how much milliput I sawed off with a razor saw. Milliput in haste - repent (or file) at leisure! Plenty of work left to do there.

At least the blanks in the engine outlets came off reasonably well, at least you can't see into the model interior.

Gradually carving away the milliput, at one point I thought about just giving in and making FOD guards. Having checked what they look like, unfortunately they didn't cover the bit I was least happy with - typical!

I've painted over with Hu64 to see what it looks like with paint on, plus the seam line which runs round the fuselage,

Once this is done then there'll be the wing join seam .

The intakes are as good as they are going to get, I'm fed up with applying filler, filing, sanding etc. I can always add FOD guards later on once I see what the gloss white finish looks like.

So on with the wings!

First reaction - holy moly, she's a big beast! Looking a the size, it must have been the 1/96 Lindberg model my Father had as I don't remember the one I had as a kid being as big as this! Plus the Airfix one came out in 1984 and I was playing with one waaaay before that.

Wing join is pretty good, couple of areas to fill with card, but pretty good given the size of the thing.

Most impressive thing will be if I can find somewhere to put her once finished   .

The wing join was pretty straightforward, not half as much work as I was expecting. I've sprayed Hu64 over to see how the finish is under primer.

In fact the bombay insert is still causing problems around it's join, despite having plenty of card tabs in place to try to re-inforce it.

I was expecting a lot more work around the intakes, particularily on the left side which need some plastic strips inserted to bridge the gap, but after one application of humbrol filler and some sanding is pretty good. Quite a relief after the milliput fiasco!

It's pretty good actually, most of the problems have been of my own creating. If I had used humbrol filler on the intakes - which is much softer and quicker to sand than milliput - then they would have been done much quicker. Careful dry-fitting and preparation seem to be the main things to help it go together well (as with any kit).
It's rather "soviet" in the build - big chunky bits with very little finesse, but nevertheless achieves it's intended target more by brawn than brain .

Construction on the tin triangle is complete. I just have to add a bit of filler around the canopy and where the pitot tube attaches to blend them in.

The undercarriage is very chunky, but holds all the weight in the nose well. I didn't bother adding any detail to the wheel wells as this is a strict OOB build.

Removed the nose thimble and the fin additions to back-date it to the early Vulcan. Filled around the cockpit. Put a layer of Hu64 on as a primer and to check the seams and finish.

There are a few minor tweaks here and there. Then I'll spray humbrol gloss white.

Excelling at turning a drama into a crisis, the build has been stalled while I sort out a suitable satin/gloss white to continue the paint job. Airfix customer care have very kindly said they will send me replacements for the three original tins of Hu22 gloss white which caused the problems in the first place, even though they seem to be old pre-Hornby stock.

In the meantime I've cut all the wheels off the sprues and cleaned up the flash and seam lines, the main wheels have been glued together. Looking at the spigots on the maingear, it looks like it will be challenging to get all the wheels touching the ground.

So I've decided to chop off the spigots and drill out holes, which will enable me to run pins through them, joining the two sets of wheels each side. As the gear holes will be larger than the pins, hopefully this will give enough play so that the wheels can all be made to touch the ground.

I had some Hu130 turn up much sooner than expected, so I thought I'd give it a try to see what it looked liked. Still pretty patchy, but another couple of coats will hopefully sort things out

Made a start painting the wheels Hu67.

I think I'm on the fifth coat of Hu130, or it could be no.4, I've rather lost count

Whatever it is I've had enough and that's as good as it's going to get. I'm going to start painting the detail bits and the engines before starting to gloss cote it for decals.
