Realistic moving suspension in 1970 perhaps.....Today what you will get is a floppy Scammell!

I strongly advise anyone building this kit to glue everything solid once you've got it aligned how you want it or it won't stay that way for very long.

All the best
Sgt.S

But most of mine are very old stock .

If you have ever seen the real thing in action it would amaze you just how much travel that suspension has. They had to restrict it for civil use, spoilsports  ..

I was furkling about in the loft and found a Scammell transporter that must have been built about 20 years ago with the kids. I found that the suspension on the tractor and trailer move okay but the front axle is a bit stiff. The poor beastie has been through hard times and lost a ramp- I'll have to give it a bit of tlc.
cheers Stuart

A close up of the front suspension for feanor:

Gawd only knows how many tries it took me to get a shot in focus!

If you fit the front axle with the good pin into the radiator loop, reduce or remove the rearfacing blob only glue the 'A' frame to the back of the engine/gearbox and the front axle frame, you will have realistic moving suspension.

I Missed the first part of this somehow.....Don't go there folks!  If you look at the pictures of part 14 you will see the blob is way off center.....Your 'realistic front suspension' will snap at the first bump!  Not only that, but by turning the part backwards you will push it back about 1mm, preventing you from correctly positioning the drivetrain.

PS - Look at the state of that chassis.....It's shocking!

Aligning The Rear Suspension
To get the tractor to sit square and level, I glued parts 25 & 27 in place with liquid-poly and dry fitted all six wheels.  The parts were then jigged with a couple of handy tools from Revell:

Once everything was square I applied a couple of drops of UHU CA glue followed by a squirt of Vitalbond accellerator:

Who says Revell Aquacolor doesn't have its good points!

The tractor now sits reasonably well, so the wheels were removed and construction continues with parts 26 & 28 being glued in place with liquid-poly:

I hope this technique will prove to be of use to someone.

All the best
Sgt.S

Ayup Andy...

I missed this picture all that while back, and i just wanna say thanks. i've got my Scammell at work with me, in the vain hope of doing a bit, but no luck. But thanks for the photo. It's such a lousy fit isn't it? looks like a date with liquid poly as you said...

Cheers, when i've glued it skew-whiff, i'll let you see !

Those new tools from Revell look nearly the same as there Acrylic paints !

I've finally finished building the tractor unit and have just basecoated it (again) in Hu29 ready for final painting:

The stowage basket will receive a couple of fuel cans and a tarpaulin or camo net before it is permanently fitted in place.

For what it's worth, all the best

All the best

PS - If it's a problem, drill it straight through and replace it with a bit of plastic rod.

1mm drill, a bit of rod or stretched sprue.....No problem!

I'd say more like 'Uncertified Trackhead'.....You don't get a certificate in that malarkey until your stash bends space-time!

All the best

Cheers guys.....Despite my incessant moaning about it, I'm actually rather enjoying this most leisurely of builds!  I'm now well underway with the paintwork, livening up the basecoat using filters and highlighting.  I have to admit that this kit is almost as awkward to paint as it is to build.....It's certainly a challenge!

All the best

Spot The Difference!

After several hours of work with filters and careful highlighting.....The model looks exactly the same under my nasty lighting!

Oh well!

For what it's worth & all the best
Sgt.S
EDIT - New Picture, after lots more work.....But it still looks the same!
