I'm making a Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9 - the later, better tool circa 1978. I've made a couple of these over the past 30 years. The canopy is provided only for the clear part, so cannot be posed open without plastic surgery;
The interior is almost non-existant (But you can't see much through the canopy, and you can't open it, either, without doing a bit of work);
Wheel wells are basic; and
It has raised panel lines.
No PE or resin parts are provided. No surprise there!
So, what you get is a good, basic kit.
The decal sheet is fabulous.
It fit together really well. I didn't motorise it. However, I drilled a hole in the pilot's headrest fairing and canopy to accept some Aeroclub rigging thread for the aerial. I've just superglued the thread into the headrest. The interior has been sprayed Gunze RLM 66, and the pilot has been painted with acrylics. I could add a gun sight, but I can't be bothered.
I want to get the aerial attached, and mask the canopy tonight, so I can spray the camo tonight. Hopefully, I can more or less finish it off, because I think I have all the right colours in acrylics.
When I finish this, I'll get onto an armour model - I'm thinking of an OOB Sdkfz 234-4. When I finish that as OOB, I'll see about making some improvements to it, to make it more accurate. I thought of making resin copies of the Matchbox mudguards, but on second thoughts, I'll make these out of plastic card. Anyway, enough of that, I'll take some photos of the Fw and post these ASAP.

Basic cockpit/pilot painting:
And you can see why I didn't bother to go OTT on it

A few things delayed my progress tonight (apart from which my aspiration didn't match my ability).
Firstly, I got the canopy on, but its fit was not great, and the rear part of the canopy (not glazed) left a noticeable gap, and difference in level. It was also not so good around the front part of the canopy, on the port side. I'm sure they were good enough when I was younger. I remember making one in the mid '80s without using any filler! So I contoured these with Gunze Mr Surfacer 500. When that was dry, I masked with Tamiya tape, then used the Mr Surfacer again.
The aerial is attached to the fin. Being elastic, it won't get in the way, and won't break during handling. _________________ “The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.” Winston Churchill |

The Gunze Mr Surfacer has been smoothed around the joints with a cotton-bud dipped in Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA).

Thanks, gents. I do my best, just for you.
Here are the decals. , and the painting guide is from another box again!
The big sheet came with this kit:
the little sheet came in an old boxing:
I'm going to make the one on the right, but I'm not using M17 - I can't find any!

I just sprayed Gunze RLM 76 over the H1 primer. I find it very difficult to tell the difference in hue.
There is no RLM 76 on the wings:

I loaded my Badger 360 with RLM 74 and my Iwata HP C with RLM 75 and gave it a blast of wet air.

Thanks Ratch. I was going to make the Jv 44 one, but then I remembered that I have the Hasegawa kit of a similar one ... so I'll do that next! _________________ “The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.” Winston Churchill |

What do you use to mask the canopy? Is it a tape? If so how do you apply and cut it?
In the past I have tried to brush paint the 'metal' bars freehand, with usually rubbish results.
Any advice welcome.
Thanks

Bravo Brews!
You really do like this kit quite a lot don't you.....I remember building a few of these as a spotty youth, as I had a bit of a thing for 'Operation Bodenplatte' back then.
For what it's worth & all the best |

The technique I usually use, and did so here, was to apply Tamiya Masking Tape. I cut off a suitable length, and aligned one straight side to a straight line of the canopy framing. Then, I used a new(ish) scalpel blade to make a cut, using the canopy framing as a guide. Strictly-speaking, the canopy framing should be flush with the transparent bit, but that just makes things overly difficult. Also, the Airfix framing is a bit heavy, but I was not willing to sacrifice a Falcon canopy, when I did naff-all on the cockpit details (I did, in the end, make a gunsight).
The OTHER way to do it, and would be recommended if the framing was in-scale (ie flush) would be to paint some clear decal film RLM 66 (the internal framing colour) then RLM 74 (the exterior colour), and cut it into thin strips. Tedious, but effective. This is the technique that Falcon recommends for their canopies. |

Thanks, Andy. Operation Bodenplatte was featured on "Dogfights". I like that series. |

I just did a touch up of RLM 76, and oversprayed some of the 74/75 mottles which I thought were a bit too coarse and a bit too round. Sprayed the prop RLM 70 and sprayed it all in Klear. _________________ “The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.” Winston Churchill |

"Dogfights"......Not run into that one yet over here, just endless reruns of "The World At War" and "Tank Overhaul".
